We had that kind of scare when JFK decided to stare down the Russians over missles in Cuba.
The nuns rounded us up and sent us home early.
Every jet passing over was noticed.

I remember sitting at our desk in school and the fire alarm sounded, the teacher told us all to get under our desks. I was stuffed under my desk thinking "what good is this if the school is in fire?"
I had no concept of Nuclear bombs!

Remember the air raid drills? We all marched down to the basement of the school and crouched in the hallway with our hands over our heads. Scary stuff.

The nuns rounded us up and sent us home early. I remember those drills. We loved it because they let us out of school early. I walked to and from school (about 20 minutes) and they emphasized we needed to be home in under 45 minutes because that was the time needed for fallout from Birmingham to reach my home town of Pell City, Alabama.
