There are many mistakes the Democrats might make in the next two years to lose control of the House and Senate.

There is one big mistake the Republicans can make that would keep the Democrats in charge of the Congress and hand them the White House:

Raise taxes.

Bears repeating, but if Bush does it he won't pay but the GOP will. There would be no way to save the situation.

The second Trojan Horse will be labeled “Tax Reform.” Like the Three Card Monte shysters on the streets of New York the Democrats will call for some tax hikes, some tax cuts and over time when the small print dries the “revenue neutral” tax bill will be a major tax hike. “Tax reform” has always been a code word among Democrats for “tax hike.”

And the third Trojan Horse the Democrats will try will be the repeal of the Alternative Minimum Tax. Because the Democrats have written rules that forbid any net tax cut, they will have to “pay for” the AMT repeal by raising at least one trillion (yes, trillion with a T) dollars in higher taxes elsewhere. Again, the tax hikes will outweigh the AMT “reform.”

More tinkering of the tax only creates a more oppressive tax code. It needs to be replaced with The Fair Tax Visit Americans For Fair Taxation website for more information. Fair Tax ping!

Yes, they will raise taxes on those "rich bastards" called the richest 1%, and trumpet it as a "middle class tax cut", which MSM will go into orgasmic fits over as "see, Democrats cut taxes on the middle class".

This always winds up being recovered by the richest 1% by increased costs of goods and services to consumers, and continued decrease in costs of labor, and the fools who vote for the socialists can't see there's no benefit to them in the end. It's class warfare in its finest form, where it's all in the name of "the common good" crap.

Like Fritz Mondale said, "Look at 'em lauging, and we're gonna tax the crap out of 'em....."

child tax credit was doubled from $500 to $1,000

If you are interested in that, you ain't "rich."

I believe that the Republicans should call for tax hikes.

But they have to do more than raise taxes on the "rich" W-2, 1099, and incorporated individuals.

That is, tax wealth, opulence, luxury. . .

Liberals of that ilk, Ted Kennedy I've heard is one, don't always collect their salaries. They have pleanty of wealth, opulence, luxury. . .

If tax changes could result in raising taxes on wealth, opulence, luxury. . . the talk of "tax the rich!" will cease immediately.

I am guessing that the truly rich are not all that concerned about such pittance amounts that capital gains and dividend payments provide. The ones that have wealth, opulence, luxury. . . have privy to other ways, I suspect. Tax those ways and their wealth, opulence, luxury. . . not the middle class with good-paying jobs and likely need the money to pay the bills in high-cost locations.

President Bushs papa, "NO new taxes". He lied and it cost him reelection.
President bush and the Republicans should learn from history.

I've heard many, on this forum, say that it was Perot who cost Bush the election. If, as is the case, Bush caused Perot, then the fault may lay elsewhere.

Grover makes a pretty good econ instructor for the GOP. Hopefully they listen to common sense, occasionally.

RE: the richest 1%

If they are going by national aggregate income figures, wouldn't the "the richest 1%" be the ones reported by the IRS as having the greatest incomes for that year?

Essentially they are limiting "taxing the rich" to wage earners, with some cap gains and dividends thrown in.

The really, really rich I suspect (I have virtually no knowledge of these things) float effortlessly well above "the richest 1%". (No I ain't jealous! Really. Well.. a mite jaundiced maybe.)

Pelosi says that she wants to repeal the tax cut for those earning more than $500,000. I doubt that an increase in taxes on those earners would have any effect on the GOP's electoral fortunes. The problem is that she'll no doubt want to increase it on the less well to do as well.

Put your commercial for the "Fair Tax" or any tax real tax reform such as the Flat Tax on the back burner. Until we have a Conservative President and Congress we the people will get hosed.

Let us now warn the Republicans of the three approaches the Democrats will use to lure them onto the rocks labeled, “tax hike.”

First, will be the “Social Security reform” deal. After denying President Bush his goal of reforming the present Social Security system to create fully funded independently held personal accounts for every American, the Democrats will now offer a deal. The deal will be the same fix that has always papered over Social Security’s problems. Higher taxes on working men and women and lower benefits for retirees. Both of these “fixes” reduce the rate of return young Americans get on their Social Security, FICA, payments. Such a tax hike/benefit cut reform will make the system temporarily solvent. It will not let Americans own their own retirement as President Bush wanted.

President Bush was elected twice on the promise to oppose any tax hike or benefit cut in Social Security. He campaigned to give all young Americans the option of a personal savings account that they control. If he holds fast, he can, like Hercules lashed to the mast, avoid this Siren song that has misled so many in the past.

Again, the tax hikes will outweigh the AMT “reform.”.........................................
.........................................................................................................................................................
Their goal, their only hope, will be to trick the Republicans into doing what President George H.W. Bush did when he went to Andrews Air Force Base in 1990 and negotiated a “budget deal” that raised taxes. It is easy to beat someone in a race if they commit suicide along the way.

Doesn't seem they do.
Look at their spending while in charge.
look at their refusal to secure our borders while in charge.
Look at their refusal to persue a conservative agenda while in charge.
Do you have any confidence they (especially the rinos) will stand up to Pelosi?

How would I pay a wealth tax? Break off 1% of my house and send it in?

A consumption tax is equivalent to a tax on wealth, but without the oppressive police state needed to enforce a wealth tax as typically proposed.

"He lied and it cost him reelection"

Point of order please. Leftist distortion of the meaning of words has crept into FR. Bush 41 broke his promise. He didn't lie. There is a difference.

St. Mario Cuomo was on Cavuto the other night, he actually attempted to explain that raising taxes on the wealthiest 1% of earners would actually make them RICHER! Never have I heard a bigger pile of macaca than that. Scariest part is, he believes it.

How would you tax a Swiss bank account?

Only way to tax wealth that I can see is to tax property. But local governments already do that. And property is only a small part of the super-rich's wealth.

The next best thing would be to make cap gains taxes much more progressive. Maybe harmonize them with income taxes. That would pretty much destroy our capital markets, unless you reduced income taxes severely, which is politically unlikely.

It's a pickle.

The left wants to redistribute wealth by robbing Peter to pay Paul. And if you pay Paul not to work, guess what? Paul is not going to work.

Cuomo and other diehard class envy socialists, want to redistribute wealth to RAT constituents, but lets face it, the primary goal is to take money away from the successful, talented, haves, even if it means burning the money when the left takes it.

The point I was trying to make is, when it comes to "tax the rich" the liberal annointed ones ruling the Rat Party (formerly the traditional, patriotic Democrat Party) seem to be focused entirely on W-2, 1099, and incorporated individual earners.

The really, really rich likely don't depend upon that type of middle class income.

Make it clear that tax increase will go well beyond the middle class income earners and into the ranks of the very, very wealthy and the talk of tax the rich will end pronto. I bet.

Since "that" tax increase will slam Small Businesses hardest; the Economy will feel it and show the results quickly. I know... I own three Small Businesses... Bush saved one of them with HIS tax cuts!
