Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- With the House of Representatives voting next week on a measure forcing taxpayers to fund new embryonic stem cell research, White House spokesman Tony Snow said President Bush still doesn't support that.
He reiterated the president's position against destroying human life for science.
Snow told a Wednesday news conference that "the President has made it clear" that he "does not believe that this kind of research necessitates the taking of a human life."
"The position hasn't changed," Snow explained.
Instead, President Bush "believes in encouraging, through federal largesse and otherwise, investigation into promising technologies" such as adult stem cell research -- which has helped patients but doesn't require destroying days-old unborn children.
Snow also touted Bush's record as the first president to provide federal funds for any kind of stem cell research -- including hundreds of millions of dollars on adult stem cells.
"[H]e believes in stem cell research so much," Snow said, pointing to "the fact that this administration has done more to finance stem cell research, embryonic and otherwise, than any administration in history."
Snow said he couldn't comment on the specific bill the Democrat-led House is in the process of drafting on embryonic stem cell research funding because it hasn't been completed.
Though the measure has a number, HR 3, the text has not been finalized.
"When we start seeing the product of those legislative deliberations then we'll be in the position to tell you where the President will stand on certain things," Snow told the news conference.
The House of Representatives is scheduled to take up the measure next Thursday. This is the second time Congress has attempted to require taxpayer funding for the unproven research.
Last May the House voted for the bill by a vote of 238 to 194 but President Bush vetoed the measure in July.
It crosses a moral boundary that our decent society needs to respect, the president said at the time.
The House failed to achieve a two-thirds override vote shortly after the veto as it voted for the measure 235-193 -- some fifty-one votes short of the two-thirds needed.
Since the votes, advocates of embryonic stem cell research, which has yet to help any human patients and experienced numerous problems in animals, gained numerous seats in the House. However, it appears they may not have enough necessary to override a second presidential veto.

A Veto of ESCR would without question raise President Bush's approval numbers by creating a wedge between the President and the Pro Death Democrats in the House and Senate.
we'll probably see a lot more vetoes in the future, all depending on how the senate votes.
Bush still shouldn't have approved the use of the existing stem cell lines--if those cells could potentially have become a trillion cell human (basically if the cell was a human).
ESCR is being pushed for one reason and one reason only and that is to provide additional safeguards to abortion.
As a previous freeper pointed out, it's a bust!
Michael Fumento, in vain I think, tries to warn against throwing our money down the embryonic stem cell rathole: Embryonic stem cell hustlers exploit paralysis
As I have said many times, if ESCR show ANY PROMISE, then private corporations would be pouring billions into it. They're not, they are putting their money in adult stem cells and it is paying off handsomely.
Why can't our politicians say this as clearly as you have. "Stem cell research" is one of the issues on which we lost the last election. It should have been a winner for our side. There are plenty of feel-good stories for the "feelers" who voted for the other side of the aisle.
Oh well, it took some republicans about 5 years to say let taxpayers "keep more of their own money" instead of "get money back." They're mostly lousy at math, but they should be better with words.
Look at all of the "wonder drugs" you see advertised that treat everything from high blood pressure and high cholesterol to impotence and wrinkles. The drug companies funded the R&D for this all on their own and it has made billions for them. If they thought there was any opportunity to make money slaughtering embryos, they would be doing it.
Hopefully the President will not sign this if it gets through -- which I doubt it will.
They actually believe they can inject embryonic stem cells into the brains of horribly handicapped people and make them whole.
They will probably take every dime of federal funding that had been directed to adult stem cell research and divert it into this piece of superstition and magic.
With Americans working extremely hard to pay taxes and little time remains to explain such a complex subject therefore short soundbites are used. The fact is embryonic stem cells have failed miserably to produce anything positive or more than hideous abnormal growths.
Here is the complex part. Adult stem cell research has produced positive results. The word 'adult' is the complex part. Adult stem cells can be obtained from umbilical cords too.
It has been over 2 years since California passed its pro stem cell research funding initiative, however I am not aware of any evil pharmaceutical companies racing to relocate west. Why is that? I thought big pharma was so evil and profit minded. Surely there is a huge potential for profit if the advertisements from the wacky lib's are to be believed.
I am disabled with a neurological condition and most likely would benefit from stem cell research, but I see no benefits in this dishonest campaign of Embryonic Stem Cell Research.
I am sorry, I thought faster than I typed. I meant:
against life created by God being destroyed.
If they insist on Federal funding why do they insist on embryonic? I guess it makes too much sense to spend money on something that actually works and would eliminate the moral argument. It just continues to prove the Democrats would rather have an issue rather than actually help people.
Embryos, even embryos in a petri dish, are human ORGANISMS. Each alive embryo is an organism, a whole being. ESCR is based in ripping this organism apart to get the parts or organs of the organism. This cannibalism doesn't bother democrats one bit (or old fools like Orrin Hatchling) because they have chosen to dehumanize the organism at earliest age in the lifetime so that they may exploit the organismal life ... that's cannibalism. The democrat party was based on the blood of the innocent aborted babies. Now, the democrat party has sunken even lower, to base their empowerment upon cannibalism. Nice, eh?
