I'm not sure the intent of your post to me. While I don't feel I have cause to "celebrate" Saddam's execution, I'm certainly glad he's gone never to brutalize his country or the Iraqi people, or their neighbors again. I take no joy in his execution, but feel sorrow for the need for humanity to confront such evil in the first place. My preference would be that brutal thugs such as Saddam and bin Laden never existed. The unfortunate reality is that they do, and must be stopped at all costs. If that required an execution, then by all means, execute them.

I only know that the usage of the word empathy in dealing with "celebrating" the death of Saddam with the Iraqi's who he brutalized was incorrect.

The word "empathy" was used correctly by me and it was not used as a synonym for "sympathy". I even documented the point with the "walk in ones shoes" comment that I made which actually matches your so-called Wiki definition.

You on the other hand, are too encumbered with political correctness to try to imagine what it must be like to be a victim of Saddam. Any such imaginations are taboo. So any thoughts of "empathy" made by somebody become thoughts of"sympathy" to you.

BTW, you should really ping a person when referring to their post.

I commented to the person who pinged me regarding your posts to me. Please go yell at them for not pinging you. And, once again, you cannot feel empathy for something you have had no experience of. If you wish to try to imagine what they lived through go ahead. But imaginination isn't the same thing. This has nothing to do with "political correctness", but is a reality check for those who think they can "feel" what the Iraqi's have endured under Saddam's brutal rule without every having lived under that rule. Such thinking is akin to a man trying to tell a woman he is empathetic to her pain of childbirth. Go ahead and try to sell that to a mother. In the meanwhile, I'll stack up my education, training, and the past 12 years of my professional experience against your "feelings" or your "Webster's definition" any day. I think that my post actually provides common ground where you are both correct.

SoldierDad is correct in distinguishing between sympathy and empathy, but I also pointed out that--as FreeReign said--one doesn't have to be an actual victim to empathize with victims.

Not that I really want to get involved in any dispute. :-)

Please explain to me how you, FreeReign, can "walk in the shoes" of the families who had one of their loved ones fed into a chipper feet first. If you can achieve that level of "empathy" then God Bless you. You are a true empath, who are rare indeed. I cannot place myself in the shoes of someone who has had to deal with that level of brutality. Having empathy for the average victim of a violent crime in the U.S. (such as robbery, battery, rape, or possibly even the average murder) is something most of are capable of. Empathy for the reign of brutality experienced by the surviving victims of Saddam's brutality is something that is on a scale most of us in the U.S. have never experienced. If you wish to place your self there, more power to you. For my mental health, I will not. I feel sorrow for the Iraqi's who were forced to endure this madman's brutality, and I'm glad he's gone never to return. But that does not mean I have to feel like celebrating what has transpired. What I will celebrate is when our troops come home from Iraq, when my son and nephew are home.

You know, in a way, I feel some admiration for the way they handled Justice once they made up their mind. If it had been in this country, it would have been a media circus and taken 10 years at least, if ever.

Perhpas we should consider hanging instead of the injection since the media is crying about how our tough, merciless killers can not take the pain of an injection.... the cowards...

i TOO love TEX-MEX food. (FYI, MOST Tex-Mex is NOT Mexican. REAL Mexicans don't hardly KNOW what it is, much less eat it.)

instead Tex-Mex is MOSTLY AmerIndian, from AZ,CA,CO,NM & TX.

FLOUR tortillas, for example, are a product of the 1930s Depression era commodities program. when the US government passed out 100# sacks of flour to the reservations, AI women made something to eat from them that was "true" to their culture. (note: my adopted elder daughter is a REAL Mexicana from Acapulco and she had NEVER seen a flour tortilla, when she came here to be with us!!! NOW she likes Tex-Mex!!!)
