billbears, as a student of the Founding Fathers and the culture of early America, how do you see a country with stocks and pillories and debtors prisons and slavery, as being superior to a society that celebrates the death of one who slaughtered thousands?

I'm not defending either situation............just pointing out that what has been said on this thread is due to the nature of humanity, and not a sign of the degradation of a society.

(There are plenty of other signs of that, but this thread is most certainly not one of them).

My son, who was there when Saddam was captured, and was in support of those who killed his sons, and was stationed at Camp Victory not more than five minutes from where Saddam was held, is THRILLED that he has been executed.

I think it is going to make a big difference in Iraq. Perhaps not immediately, but eventually, and therefore, it will have a significant effect on our military.

It will change things for the better for our troops. It already has for my son.

And Elfat El Aouar and her husband, Talal Chahine, who pleaded guilty to tax evasion a couple of weeks ago. They converted skimmed funds to small cashier checks and sent the money to Lebanon. The husband is believed to be in Lebanon and is considered a fugitive.

Also, Mahmoud Kourani, the brother of a Hezbollah general, Kourani hosted fundraisers for the Party of God before he pleaded guilty last year to materially supporting the group. He will be deported.

They have to minimize the effect that it will have on the American People. If the people use their common sense and see that this is a good thing, that is a defeat to the Samestream Press. That is why they will have to lie 24/7 that this is really a bad thing to lose another mass murderer from the planet.

Course they never mention his $25 per suicide bomber reward. Perhaps they can ask some Israeli victims?

And I do neither. But I do not see the appointed time for an execution to be whooping it up and jumping for joy either. Justice was served and rightly so. But do mere observers have a right to rejoice, make jokes, etc.? That is reserved for the victims of the criminal.

As I said in a earlier post to somebody else, it is a solemn thing to have to do, to meet out justice by killing somebody.

That said, it's also worth celebrating. Saddam's death marks a point forward where he could never be a threat again.

Victims celebrate. So do people who can imagine what it must be like to be a victim. It's our moral obligation to walk in somebody else's shoes -- not to sit back and say that only the victim can imagine what it must be like.

Back in WWII we had to kill many Japanese before they finally surrendered. It was August 1945. The emperor of Japan surrendered.

Saddam never did surrender. He was defiant until the end. So it was his execution that ended the threat of Saddam and both solemn and celebratory thoughts are in order.

I'm sure there were many a solemn contemplation back in August of '45.

Further, I pity those casual bystanders who feel the need to "celebrate" something which has little to do with them directly.

It's our moral responsibility to try and identify how others feel -- that would include identifying how it must feel to be a victim of Saddam.

Saddam's crimes were criminal to all. I pity those who have no more empathy than bystander-ness when it comes to crime and the victims of crime.

It's a solemn thing to have to kill a criminal. It is also a time of celebration of justice served...for everybody.

And please understand in no way am I defending Hussein or Iraq. There is no defense. I prefer our situation much more. For what he did, he deserved death.

But underlying feelings, emotions, etc. are what make up people that make up a society. Those people have an effect on society. Take almost any social issue. No need to look to the Framers, just step back 50-60 years. In some instances (i.e. women's suffrage, equal rights, etc.) there have been major improvements. But in many instances, such as dealing with life or death or the value of privacy, wouldn't you say that we have begun changing into a society that places a different value on certain issues?

I'm not saying it's prevalent..yet. And I'm not saying the all of the posts on this thread were over the top. But you have to admit there was a certain difference last night even on the networks. CNN, Fox, and MSNBC were discussing how to bring the video to the masses. The question never arose why in the hell we want to see someone die. Would it be feasible to suggest that in this type of environment PPV executions would sell? Or possibly a reality show that covers someone's last week before their execution. It's coming. Because it is apparent there is an audience for it.

ohioWfan, I respect your opinion however in this case I must respectfully disagree. This thread may not have been a sign but I think it was possibly a foreshadowing of what could possibly one day be the norm

You cited a post I responded to, instead of my response. You'll note the quotation marks around the text you cited.

Also, I disagree with you on the subject of McVeigh getting swift justice. It wasn't as bad as the dude who's been waiting for 27 years for his appointment in the execution chamber, but it's not exactly swift, either. We used to do executions considerably faster than we do now. MAYBE it's better that everyone get multiple chances at appeal, since we also seem to convict the innocent more frequently than I'm comfortable with, but I think we need to improve the system considerably.

Celebration of Justice Served, yes. Celebration for the need to met out such justice in the first place, no. We can have sympathy for victims of violent crimes, but not empathy unless we too have been a victim (such as in losing a loved one to a murderous tyrant or thug). Unless one has experienced that pain, there is no way of really identifying with those who have. Imagining the pain is not, and can never be the same as experiencing that pain.

Actually, east Dearborn is a very nice place filled with a lot of good people. Of course there are some kooks, and there have been some pro-Khomeini demonstrations there in the past by a few of them. But after 9/11 there were only pro-American demonstrations.

It's really wrong, I think, to lump people together based on incorrect or incomplete information.

Ah, but those pictures were taken at the celebration for the end of the war weren't they? Either V-E or V-J day. In both cases, the celebration that war was over, people were coming home, etc. The war was over, peace was achieved. If your view were to hold, you would be able to provide widespread evidence celebrating the death of Mussolini (outside of Italy and the surrounding areas) or the celebration here in these US when the Nuremburg executions were completed.

And I'm almost certain there weren't video cameras covering the dropping of atomic weapons with followups on the ground either. I'm also quite sure that the majority of the citizens of the respective states had little to no clue, or grasp, of exactly what the bomb did. But I doubt 1945 society didn't have almost immediate access to pictures of the dead either.

We have hardened as a society. It takes more to shock us, and therefore we are excited or happy at things today that would have shocked our ancestors. That's all I'm saying
