Scandalous new details of how Bill Clintons national security advisor schemed to remove highly classified terrorism documents from the National Archives paint the picture of a desperate man who tried to bully a trash collector into helping him commit the crime.
Sandy Berger took the sensitive documents in 2003 as he prepared to testify, on behalf of the Clinton Administration, before the September 11 Commission. He stole the documents, hid them under a construction trailer and later tried to get a trash collector to retrieve them.
Berger pleaded guilty to unlawfully removing the classified files and got a tiny slap on the hand--$50,000 fine, 100 hours of community service and a three-year bar from accessing classified material---but the gory details of how he carried out the operation had not been released until now.
A report issued by the Inspector General of the National Archives reveals how archive employees spotted Berger bending down and fiddling with something white around his ankles. When Berger was confronted by archive officials about the missing documents, he denied taking them.
Berger proceeded to take a break and went outside in the dark with four classified documents in his pocket. He then headed toward a construction area and looked up and down the street, into the windows of the archive building and at the Department of Justice, to see if anyone was looking. All was clear, so Berger slid the documents under a construction trailer and later retrieved them from the construction area and returned with them to his office.

This was clearly a premeditated criminal act on Bergers part and Outside the Beltway points out that any military or civil service employee would be in jail for such a felony. The question is, why would Clintons national security advisor turn into a thief, disgrace himself and betray his country? Pundit Review speculates that Clinton was clearly trying to hide something.

The very Obvious... Sandy Berger was trying to hide something for Bill Clinton concerning terrorim against the United States
It's the kinda thing that Berger and other Clintonistas did on a regular basis. They just got caught this time.
Wrong question.
The correct question is: Why did the Bush Justice Department give Burglar a slap on the wrist instead of prosecuting him to the max? Why would George Bush agree to give Burglar a pass?
The correct answer is that one hand (Bush) washes the other (Clinton).
The anger expressed on this and other threads regarding the theft should be equally directed towards Clinton and Bush.
They got caught other times too, like when Clinton had thousands improperly obtained of FBI files , June 5,1996. on June 11, 1996, Clinton calls the improperly obtained FBI Files "an honest bureaucratic snafu"
I don't believe that.
You don't believe what? Why?
I don't believe that President Bush washes Clinton's hands.
You are so right.
Unfortunately that is how the game is played in Washington. One party is just as corrupt as the other. Power in Washington is measured on information of the opposition. I am sure that the Democrats know where all the Republican bodies are buried just as the Republicans know where the Democrats are.
The "slap on the wrist" that Berger received was the minimum they felt they could give to make it seem that they were actually doing something.
Since he is a Democrat, Berger would not have even been prosecuted 15 years ago. With the advent of the alternate media, they now feel obligated to at least do something.
contributing to the electoral beating the pubbies took this cycle
"Sandy Berger took the sensitive documents in 2003 as he prepared to testify, on behalf of the Clinton Administration, before the September 11 Commission."
I wish they would stop saying this. You don't steal documents when you are trying to prepare to testify. He used the excuse of getting in to the archives to detroy this sensitive material. The other spin I don't buy is the millenium plot BS. Do you really think Berger would risk jail time and public humiliation over the fact it was a customs agent who exposed the terrorist plot and not the Clinto Admin? It's bigger than this.
He who controls the past controls the future. Sandy was just fine tuning history a bit.
You are correct on this one pal.
If the Bush administration cared a whit about justice, Berger would be in the early stages of a VERY long prison term.
What kind of precedent does this set? A former National Security Advisor stole classified information during wartime, and he gets a slap on the wrist?
One wonders where Hillary's unlawfully-obtained 1,100 FBI files are now.
"He stole the documents, hid them under a construction trailer and later tried to get a trash collector to retrieve them."
Tried? Something is going unsaid here.
