HARTFORD, Conn. -- Police shot a man's dog in front of his daughter on Wednesday night.
Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Jamie Roth reported Hartford police officers shot a St. Bernard by the front door of Glen Harris' home. ...
Harris claimed it all began when officers unexpectedly showed up in the yard. ...
"They didn't knock. They ignored the sign, the dog sees or hears (and) protects my daughter, so he ran toward him -- not growling, not foaming at the mouth, not anything," Harris said.
Police told Eyewitness News the officers were investigating a complaint about guns when the dog charged them. Two officers said they ran to the street and that the dog lunged at the second officers, who fired three shots.
Harris said his daughter saw the whole thing.
"While she's running toward the dog, they kill him. She's yelling, 'Why'd you shoot him? I was going to get him. Why'd you shoot him?'" Harris said.
Police continue to investigate the incident. The police report in the incident does not list any guns found at the Harris home and no one was arrested.
Poor kid.
Was that "Dan Lovelace"?
If so, I'll point out to other readers on the thread that he didn't just shoot her to death, he shot her in the back.
For trying to get a questionable prescription filled.
Courts are beginning to recognize that dogs are frequently considered to be highly valued members of the family, that families have a strong and valued emotional attachment to their animals. (Anyone with a heart who has lost a dog knows this to be true) Thus, shooting a family pet is much more than simply shooting "a dog".
I'm not normally sue happy, but I hope that the family finds a very competent attorney and a very sympathetic judge and jury.
Agreed. There are some who seem to have some kind of overbearing control issue - like the kid back in grade school who acted as the teacher's little "helper", and told her/him everything that all the other kids did...
Many years ago I read an article about Bull Mastiffs (which St Bernard's are bred from. The article said NEVER to hit the dog. My thought at the time was that I sure wouldn't want to hit a dog that big. But the reason for the advice was not to protect the person striking the dog...but rather the dog itself. Mastiffs are so gentle that hitting them breaks their spirit.
Most of the giant breeds have all the aggression bred out of them. I just don't understand this story.
We had one of those in this area a few years back ~ illegal alien was renting a downstairs room. A bad guy lived upstairs. Cops came with a warrant. Went downstairs and the illegal and his wife had turned over their table and were hiding behind it since they thought it was the bad guy after them and not cops.
Cops busted open the door. Saw the guy's gun. Fired through the table to kill him.
They didn't give a moment's thought to the possibility the guy might have his family back there with him out of fear of the local bad guy.
He's dead. The cops walked. Doubt any of them are let near a cashregister though.
Stop with all of the logic please. Lets stick to the knee jerk reactions.
"Old Yeller" for the 21st Century.
I love dogs, but this dog was loose. A loose big dog on the street. One that this family thinks is a benefit to the whole neighborhood, so he's probably loose all the time. I have a feeling in real life, he's a hazard, and a neighborhood nuisance, and they're lucky they hadn't lost him already to a car. Loose dogs in suburban neighborhoods don't mix.
~chuckling~
I think the vast majority of them are wonderful. But the bad ones are the most vile, degenerate, despicable human beings on the planet, and are in a position to cause a great deal of mischief.
I imagine these cops are in trouble. They shot the family dog but they did not shoot the child, too. They will probably be reprimanded for not shooting the child. After all, she could have been hiding an "assault rifle" or a nuclear bomb or something.
Who were these pukes? In San Diego that is?
Which also demonstrates the problem that there are too many cops, none of whom are peace officers.
Come on. Not all bernards are mild. The artical clearly said the dog "lunged". There's one in my neighborhood that is slightly aggressive. If there's one that's slightly agressive, there's one that's very aggressive.
We had a St. Bernard when I was growing up. If my dad so much as raised his voice to us kids in front of the dog, she was all growls and teeth between us.
To All of the Police Bashers,
It is sad. But why is it that people always assume the worst of the police? If you have probable cause then you don't call the suspect! Do you wait until someone gets bit? They can't take any chances any more than with a person. Just because you saw "Beethoven", doesn't mean that all St. Bernards are cute and loveable. The family had a sign up for a reason! The sign didn't say, "beware of slobbering dog".
I hope the next time you have an emergency that warrents police, that you deal with it yourself, because obviously you don't trust them.
Wow, I never thought I'd see this. Hairofthedog not defending a dog no matter what the situation...amazing.
