So maybe we should give guns to all the postal workers and every time a dog "lunges" the mailman gets to shoot it?

Anybody ever hear of nonlethal force? If the dog was threatening life and limb, which I very seriously doubt, then hit it with pepper spray. And yes...the cops had pepper spray. They all do.

As a former postal "worker" may I commend you for your common sense concerning dogs.

An alternative dream is that the people see the letter carrier coming down the road and they shoot their own dogs dead before he gets there and reaches out his hand to get bitten off at the wrist.
