Police Shoot Dog In Front Of Family

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Police shot a man's dog in front of his daughter on Wednesday night.

Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Jamie Roth reported Hartford police officers shot a St. Bernard by the front door of Glen Harris' home. ...

Harris claimed it all began when officers unexpectedly showed up in the yard. ...

"They didn't knock. They ignored the sign, the dog sees or hears (and) protects my daughter, so he ran toward him -- not growling, not foaming at the mouth, not anything," Harris said.

Police told Eyewitness News the officers were investigating a complaint about guns when the dog charged them. Two officers said they ran to the street and that the dog lunged at the second officers, who fired three shots.

Harris said his daughter saw the whole thing.

"While she's running toward the dog, they kill him. She's yelling, 'Why'd you shoot him? I was going to get him. Why'd you shoot him?'" Harris said.

Police continue to investigate the incident. The police report in the incident does not list any guns found at the Harris home and no one was arrested.

No knock raid. 'Beware of Dog' sign out. Searching for 'guns.' No guns found, family dog shot instead. "Oops, sorry 'bout that."

Forgot to tag that as an "excerpt."

Sounds like a paid hit of some kind gone bad. Remember that the daughter says she was out there running around the yard going toward the dog.

These cops missed their target.

Are they really cops or like the pukes we had out there in San Diego county this summer ~

Makes me wonder how the shooting of that football player worked to change the W/L records in pro-football. Anyone know?

Saint Bernard, huh? What--were they afraid of getting slobbered to death?

Everybody knows St. Bernards are vicious, bloodthirsty killers. I'm sure these cops were just acting in self defense. /sarc

I'm surprised they didn't shoot the kid as well. After all, it sounds like she was running in their general direction.

Garnish the officer's wages until he pays off the cost of a replacement St. Bernard puppy. Failure to heed the "Beware of Dog" sign, failure to call the residents on the phone and killing the dog on the pretense that it was "lunging" at them. In the end, it was a fishing expedition without merit.

What business is it of the police to care whether the residents have guns? The right to keep and bear arms is a protected the 2nd amendment. Trampling on people's rights and destroying their private property at the same time. There was no mention that "guns" were being used by the residents to threaten or inflict harm on anyone.

Just noting that the football player shot on Poway was Foley (of the Sandygo Chargers) and the cop who shot him was named Aaron Mansker.

Turned out in court this guy was in plain clothes, outside his jurisdiction, in a POV, and didn't show his badge.

He managed to wound Foley sufficiently to keep him out of the 2006 football season.

It's sure going to be interesting to see what the personal relationship between the shooter in this case is with that young lady. Did she turn him down? Is she scheduled to be a witness in court? There's gotta' be much more to it than these guys just wandering down the street "investigating" and then shooting a dog in its own yard.

Ok... next idiot to approve of gun control laws gets my fist in his teeth. No more Mr. Nice-guy. "Shall not be infringed". If you don't understand the words you have no business enforcing any arbitrary laws.

St. Bernard's are about as mild mannered as they come. I hope the cops are fired and the family sues...and wins.

A Mesa, Arizona cop shot a mother to death with a child sitting in the car.

St. Bernard - they can jump on someone and slobber until the victim is ready to puke - but they are otherwise harmless.

The problem is that you have a lot of good cops. But you always have some with a chip on their shoulder who can't wait to prove how BIG a man (or woman) they are.

St. Bernards can lunge, but a more appropriate defense might be something like a fuzzy cube, or a slingshot armed with a sponge.

Yeah, a lot of this stuff doesn't add up. Have you heard anything new about the shootout between the cops and the 88 year old woman? Last I heard about that one it sounded like they planted evidence and tried to intimidate an informant.

Come on. Not all bernards are mild. The artical clearly said the dog "lunged". There's one in my neighborhood that is slightly aggressive. If there's one that's slightly agressive, there's one that's very aggressive.

No knock raid. 'Beware of Dog' sign out. Searching for 'guns.' No guns found, family dog shot instead. "Oops, sorry 'bout that."

They were outside in the yard and had not yet gotten to the door. What were they supposed to 'knock' on? The sidewalk? The dog was loose and was shot off the owner's property. They did retreat and the dog was not fenced or under anyone's control, as he should have been. This was not a 'raid', they were not just out randomly 'searching for guns' they were investigating a gun complaint. The details of that complaint were not given here.

I'm not saying it was a justified shoot, but please, lets stick to the actual facts presented (of which there are not many) when drawing transparent preconceived anti-cop conclusions about it, OK?
