They were outside in the yard and had not yet gotten to the door. What were they supposed to 'knock' on? The sidewalk? The dog was loose and was shot off the owner's property. They did retreat and the dog was not fenced or under anyone's control, as he should have been. This was not a 'raid', they were not just out randomly 'searching for guns' they were investigating a gun complaint. The details of that complaint were not given here.
I'm not saying it was a justified shoot, but please, lets stick to the actual facts presented (of which there are not many) when drawing transparent preconceived anti-cop conclusions about it, OK?
Stop with all of the logic please. Lets stick to the knee jerk reactions.

Are you trying to rain on their parade?
Why are you so quick to come to the defense of a 'government' organization? Last time I checked, police were part of government. Is it because they "protect" us? Did they protect the girl? Did they protect the neighbors from GUNs (oooohhh, shiver...)?
Cops are people and make mistakes. Unfortunately, the police ranks are filled with immature males that need some aging to ripen. They are capable, fit, and have a good head on their shoulders, but the macho instinct can often lead to things like this. These people are lucky they don't live in Atlanta w here they shoot 88 year old women and then try to cover it up...
Such quick conclusions are almost a natural because of the police penchant for killing peoples' pets. It is SOP in any raid and is NOT limited to dogs. Cats suffer less because they are smaller and tend to run away very rapidly.
