Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Disturbing statistics on the number of Hispanics who daily go hungry in America was released at a press conference on Wednesday by the National Council of La Raza (NCLR). The national Hispanic civil rights group found that nearly one in five people lack nutritious food.
NCLR officials said in a press release that increasing federal nutrition assistance programs would help decrease the growing "food insecurity" faced by 19.6 percent of Latinos in America.
"Lack of access to resources is forcing far too many Latino families into choices no one should have to make, such as between having a roof over their heads or putting food on the table. A lack of affordable, nutritious food also has devastating health consequences, such as increasing hunger and obesity, affecting not only the Latino community but the well-being of our entire nation," Janet Murgua, NCLR President and CEO, said in the statement.
Hispanics are the largest minority in America.
BBC news reported on Thursday that one of the study's authors, Jennifer Ng'andu, said that when it came to issues of hunger and malnutrition in the U.S. that the Latino community was "practically invisible."
According to the study, although lack of food is more of a problem for Hispanics than for whites in America, it is still African Americans who are most likely to go hungry every day.
The study found that the number of Hispanics going hungry was three percent higher than for non-Hispanic whites and eight percent lower than for non-Hispanic blacks, BBC reported.
You're right, I forgot to mention healthy, I was thinking if but forgot to type it.
Ever see the welfare office? No one's starving in the USA, no one, our "poor" kids wear baby jordans.
I used to like all the fruit and most of the puddings. I bought them for years as snacks.
Great! A very welcome change.
Educating these people is key to fending off the oncoming issues....
Good Freeping!
Did you read my earlier post showing how I feed my family healthy, balanced and nutritious meals for about $2 a pop? THIS is where the problem lies, IMHO. People may have access to the basic foods they need...but they don't know what to do with them! I've fed a family of SIX (three adults, three growing boys) for about $150 a month for years on end. It can be done. No one ever went to sleep hungry in our house; and none of us are big old fatties, either.
In my next life, I'm going to be some sort of HomeEc teacher, educating the poor on what to do with a piece of meat, a vegetable, a handful of rice or a potato. We're so far removed from our food supply it's ridiculous! Heck, Grandma used to feed twelve of us on one cold, leftover potato and whatever roadkill she could find that day, LOL!
(Well, that's a slight exaggeration, but you get my drift.) :)
Plenty of junk in that trunk, LOL! :)
Sorry, no. I just got the last kid OUT the door...this is now officially 'Mama's Time.' :)
But feel free to use my recipes, LOL!
Every Latino that I've met in the past five years....is pushing 180 lbs (male). These fellows aren't starving. I'm very puzzled by this news item and wonder ifing they are referring to some Latinos in Canada or Alaska.
Rich, white anorexics are the hungriest people in America.
Of course, had they stayed in Mexico or environs further south, it would be 3 out of every 5, so jumping our borders at least feeds a couple more!
And go to any home depot and look at the anount of food tossed on the ground by the day workers{tax free workers}.
LOL! I'm starting with a bit of middle age spread that I'm exercising very hard to get rid of. Then I see young preteen and teen girls and the amount of bulging fat around their exposed middle is enough to make me sick!
When I was a teen, I'd have hid in my room if I looked like that. I guess perceptions among the youth are changing--so many are heavy that it doesn't look bad to them anymore. But it sure looks bad to me. Whatever happened to long t-shirts and sweatshirts to cover that mess up?
Some of the females push 180 too. And surpass it. And wear belly-show-off blouses in the summer, evidently proud of their huge spare tires. (And not just Hispanic young women, lots of fat young women all over. Crammed into the tightest jeans that the laws of quantum mechanics will allow and displaying gargantuan expanses of sexy [they think] whale blubber.)
