Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Disturbing statistics on the number of Hispanics who daily go hungry in America was released at a press conference on Wednesday by the National Council of La Raza (NCLR). The national Hispanic civil rights group found that nearly one in five people lack nutritious food.
NCLR officials said in a press release that increasing federal nutrition assistance programs would help decrease the growing "food insecurity" faced by 19.6 percent of Latinos in America.
"Lack of access to resources is forcing far too many Latino families into choices no one should have to make, such as between having a roof over their heads or putting food on the table. A lack of affordable, nutritious food also has devastating health consequences, such as increasing hunger and obesity, affecting not only the Latino community but the well-being of our entire nation," Janet Murgua, NCLR President and CEO, said in the statement.
Hispanics are the largest minority in America.
BBC news reported on Thursday that one of the study's authors, Jennifer Ng'andu, said that when it came to issues of hunger and malnutrition in the U.S. that the Latino community was "practically invisible."
According to the study, although lack of food is more of a problem for Hispanics than for whites in America, it is still African Americans who are most likely to go hungry every day.
The study found that the number of Hispanics going hungry was three percent higher than for non-Hispanic whites and eight percent lower than for non-Hispanic blacks, BBC reported.
You know I was slightly worring about turning 50 as far as my looks go but the more I look at young girls I feel much better. Not only are many fat they like to show their young cellulite to everyone and their fat muffins. Yuck.
"Who writes this stuff?"

Are you talking bad about my cows??
Now that is the gospel truth, it seems you see a fat blob of young girl walking around with rolls of fat hanging out like she had one of those forty something beer gut some men have. Double yuck!
I liked the part where they are "invisible."
Food insecurity is the official term for hungry now, we were told so recently.
I never saw a fat person who wasn't hungry.
Same here I thought that obesity and diabetes would be the problem.
"I live in Los Angeles and, more often than not, "Hispanics" are very well fed."
I live in LA too, and I agree. But hey, La Raza (The Race) must not think that Mexican cooking is that nutritious. Bet they eat better here than back in the old country.
If they're having problems, then perhaps they shouldn't send home all that money and use it for more "nutritious" food.
Response: The response to this hysterical statement is obvious.
They came to this conclusion to further their propaganda of the poor, mistreated hispanics.
We choose 10 to 12 families and make them Thanksgiving and Christmas bags with veritable feasts and gifts for the children. There are a couple of families who are always on the list, they call us, we don't call them. This year we chose people in our own parish who we know are having hard times but would never ask. We called them beforehand and some graciously refused and some were very grateful for the offer. It was a pleasure to do it this year because we knew who we were dealing with and it wasn't just someone who wanted something for free.
As far as I can see, around here anyway, the Hispanics have a corner on the welfare programs and there is no reason for a legal citizen to go hungry with all the programs out there.
Back in the days I went hungry a few times, I used to feed my son his baby food and when he was full I ate the rest, YUCK, but it was food and it was cheap then. I never even thought of asking for help, just a job.
Communist propagandists.
Twenty years ago the ones jumping the border, were thin, probably had missed a few meals, the ones breaking into the country today are all WELL fed.
Asking for evidence, facts, proof, are you? What a spoilsport. It's all about identity politics. sarc/
But the bannas baby food is one of the best tasting things there is.
.....not to mention healthy too. With all these .99c stores around getting veggies and canned goods , you can eat quite reasonably.
Not so. If it is so, GO BACK TO MEXICO.
Hmmmmm....they they are going to live LONG....don't they know....missing a meal here and there is good for your health???
