Welcome to Sanity Island. It's been a busy and memorable day.

Today, President Bush led the Pentegon's Farewell to Secretary of State Donald Rumsfeld.

Full story here.

President Bush also Honored Medal of Freedom Recipients in the East Room.

Fellow recipients of the 2006 Presidential Medal of Freedom applaud as President George W. Bush bestows the honor on David McCullough during ceremonies Friday, Dec. 15, 2006, at the White House. Said the President, "This chronicler of other times is one of the eminent Americans of our time. The nation owes a debt of gratitude to a fine author and a fine man." Quotes of the Day

"The record of Don Rumsfeld's tenure is clear; … there has been more profound change at the Department of Defense over the past six years than at any time since the department's creation in the late 1940s.”

“On his watch, NATO sent its forces to defend a young democracy in Afghanistan more than 3,000 miles from Europe, the first time NATO has deployed outside the North Atlantic area in the history of the alliance."

“Most importantly, he worked to establish a culture in the Pentagon that rewards innovation and intelligent risk-taking and encourages our military and civilian leaders to challenge established ways of thinking."

"These changes were not easy to make, but Rumsfeld’s determination and leadership led to the best equipped, best trained and most experienced military in the world. “This man knows how to lead, and he did, and the country is better off for it.”

No, it isn't only the color. One good example is Michael Steele, who ran for Senator in MD. He was clearly the best qualified candidate, and he's Black and GOP. The white Dem won.
Blacks, Jews, Seniors, Catholics, young mothers all vote overwhelmingly for Dem candidates.

Howard Dean said that the Dems have to find more Black candidates so they don't have another "Steele problem". Hence Obama.

Thanks for posting those quotations. I'm sorry I missed the ceremony.

Ah, but Lieberman wouldn't necessarily have to give up his power. He's made it clear that he's "disappointed" in how the Dems treated him. He's staying with the Dems so he can keep his seniority (power). But the GOP could easily vote to let him keep his seniority if he switches.

He's out of step with the far Left that have control of the Dems now. I lost respect for him when he sold out to run with Gore, but I don't think he will go along totally with the Marxist Dems.

Seniority is the issue for him.

Per the photo in #201:

Pace recognized Joyce Rumsfeld for her contributions to her husband’s service in the Pentagon. “Anybody who has ever been in the same room with Joyce Rumsfeld knows her warmth, her compassion,” the general said. “She spent so many hours volunteering, working on family issues, visiting troops in the hospitals.”

Pace presented her with the department’s Distinguished Public Servant Award. Pace boiled the award citation down to, “Joyce, thank you, we love you, God bless you and your husband in the next stages of your lives.”

I agree with you on Liebermann I do not see him siding with the Republicans on anything apart from certain aspects to do with WOT.

Isn't it dreamy? The scene we all wished we lived in our childhoods .. ;)

Didja see the The Christmas Card ?

This is a MUST SEE! It's SO wonderfully done, and a PowerPoint presentation I got in an email. Just copy and paste it into your browser, and click ESC button to exit when finished. WOW!

If anyone would like me to forward the email with the direct link that's hidden, just FRmail me, and I'll forward it to you.

I wish I could find the version with music, but I can't seem to. If anyone else finds that version with Karen Carpenter singing "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," PLEASE ping me. The music makes it SO much nicer. Thank you.

Lots of hankies. I just say Godspeed to Mr. and Mrs. Rumsfeld. We will have to carry on.

So many are ungrateful or just plain unaware of the service and sacrifice of these great Americans, the one being honored, the ones honoring, the troops and family members participating.. great Americans all.
