NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Would Mustang Sally drive a station wagon? Maybe she'll get the chance.
The next generation of the Ford Mustang could include some previously unthinkable variants including a four-door sedan and a station wagon, according to a report in the magazine AutoWeek.
"To a Mustang purist, this is blasphemy," said Bob Gritzinger, AutoWeek's senior editor for news.

A friend of mine had his 1973 Corvette converted into a "sports wagon" configuration by a local body shop.
Still only had two seats, but you actually had a place to put luggage for a weekend getaway trip.
Sorry, the source says that the first Nomads were derived from the corvette as concept cars but GM decided to commercialize it under the BelAire line.
There was a station wagon prototype of the Camaro - they made something like 17 of them. I remember it from an old, old Hot Rod magazine article.
Will it have a fold-down seat facing out the back? Maybe a compass mounted on the dash? Trailer hitch to pull that Nimrod pop-top camper? Little decals in the window of all the places you've been? C'mon now, these details are important...
I bet it would be worth a tidy sum today!.........
No such thing.
There was a station wagon variant of the Corvair. I don't recall what it was called. There was also a van version, kinda like the VW van.
Of course, if you read the article the first thought that comes to mind is that it is simply written by another poor journalist.
It looks to me like a four door and a wagon built off the Mustang platform are being considered. I HIGHLY doubt they would be called a Mustang. The Mustang platform is a RWD variant of the C1 platform, which is currently the basis for the Mazda3, European Ford Focus, Volvo S40, V50, C70, and the Mazda 5.
So you could also think of it as a RWD version of a Mazda3 or Ford Focus. Makes the 4-door and wagon ideas seem a lot less threatening.
Now, if you think 4 door like the "4" door Mazda RX-8, that setup you might see on a Mustang...
Concept car. Interesting. Cool page on older wagons too. Thanks.
Sorry? Sorry about what?
Looks like the Dodge Magnum, probably where they got the idea.
I believe the Nomad was more like a variation of the Bel-Air than the Corvette, but I may be wrong...
I'm holding out for a Shelby Cobra Mini-van.
It doesn't look all that bad - of course, the Mustang enthusiasts will have a cow.
Sorry I didn't read the complete source before posting.
My bad.
why would they do that to a mustang? don't they have other old, no longer used car names they could bring back, like the fairlane or the galaxy?
Mercedes is going to make a 4 door convertible, based on the car above. Nice. World Class. Luxury. Status. But, not by old, main stream motor makers like Ford or GM. They don't have the confidence, the balls. So, they are stuck in the middle, not cheap or good enough as the Asians, not quality or daring enough like the Germans. The young and functional go to Asians, and the car lovers and wealthy go German. Well, thank God for car rental companies. Anyways, it will take Ford three or four more years to come out with a station wagon. This story is just so they can have something, anything fer God's sake at the Detroit auto show. Their home town show. Pathetic.
I'd say it's definitely where they got the "courage" to give it a try.
The engineers at GM played around with the Corvette, but it was never a wagon - commercially. If someone wants to look at concept cars, that's like another world compared to real cars that actually drove on the streets.
