Ladies and Gentlemen, lets drop the partisanship for a second and recognize that the media coverage of Sen. Tim Johnsons (D-SD) sudden illness has been nothing but disgraceful.
The first reports I heard on this issue came early yesterday on CNBC, and immediately the discussion was about how this could change the balance of power in the Senate. I was disgusted.
As my daughter and I left the gym in the early evening, she questioned me about the Senator, and how this would impact politics. I was a bit shocked, and asked her where she had heard about his malady. She said that it was on the television in the ladies locker room, and the announcers were discussing how this might hurt the Democrats.
Lets get a grip for a second here, folks. A man is fighting for his life right now, and that should be much more important than how this impacts who will control the Senate. Yet, just moments ago, this was the headline of an Associated Press article: GOP governor has the power to appoint Senate replacement. These were the first two paragraphs:
Control of the U.S. Senate could be determined by Republican Gov. Mike Rounds if a replacement must be named for Democratic Sen. Tim Johnson.
State law would allow the governor to appoint a temporary replacement for a vacant Senate seat until the next general election in 2008, when Johnson's term expires.
How disgraceful. Our thoughts and prayers should be going out to this man and his family without any discussion about the balance of power unless we really have lost all sense of decency, morality, and humanity in this country.
Get well soon, Senator!
Why surprise. The Media is tasteless and crude. They care for nothing put hearing their own voices and OPINIONS.
Even if Senator Johnson died, Reid would have the doctors keep him on a ventillator until his term expired.
That is so insane! If people and politics matter more than ideas and truth then why should anyone ever die for their country?
Can't sue, as it's not a 'law', that's in the Constitution.
ours not Europeans ;-)
Get ready to hear the left discuss the difference between the "law" versus what's "fair". It will be unvarnished adolescence on parade.
Why would that be "honorable?"
Then why fight wars? Listen to yourself!?!?!
I wouldn't put it past them at all.
One blink means 'tax'. Two blinks means 'spend'.
I agree with Noel, 100%.
LOL -- literally!!!
I concur. While I wish Sen. Johnson a full recovery, I am reminded that his was a seat stolen by Mr. Johnson thanks to voting irregularities with Indian tribes. I can't speak of Democrats and honor in the same sentence.
They are right to care about political power. All the caring in the world about the man will not hurt him or help him one iota.
Are you sure Biden wasn't out recovering from hair transplant surgery or foot in mouth disease?
Regardless, I wish Johnson a full and speedy recovery after he retires from the Senate for the good of his health and his family. :)
Thanks for bringing me back to reality, I was feeling very guilty for some of my thoughts.
Well, they'll do something... :-)
"It is probably making the guy far worse having Harry Reid hanging over him. Probably looks like an Angel of Death!"
Dingy Harry does look like an undertaker! )))))shiver(((((
Prayers for Senator Johnson.
I agree wholeheartedly. The media coverage has been way to partisan in this respect. All politics aside, I beleive we sholud all have the senator in our prayers and voice our wishes for a speedy recovery.
I make my living off the evening news
Just give me something - something I can use
People love it when you lose,
They love dirty laundry
Well, I coulda been an actor, but I wound up here
I just have to look good, I dont have to be clear
Come and whisper in my ear
Give us dirty laundry
Kick 'em when they're up
Kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up
Kick 'em all around
We got the bubble-headed-bleach-blonde who comes on at five
She can tell you 'bout the plane crash with a gleam in her eye
It's interesting when people die
Give us dirty laundry
Can we film the operation?
Is the head dead yet?
You know, the boys in the newsroom got a running bet
Get the widow on the set
We need dirty laundry
You don't really need to find out what's going on
You don't really want to know just how far it's gone
Just leave well enough alone
Eat your dirty laundry
Kick 'em when they're up
Kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're stiff
Kick 'em all around
Dirty little secrets
Dirty little lies
We got our dirty little fingers in everybody's pies
We love to cut you down to size
We love dirty laundry
We can do the innuendo
We can dance and sing
When it's said and done we haven't told you a thing
We all know that crap is king
Give us dirty laundry
It is doubly sickening.
Not only is it morbid, but the "politicial reporting" is atrociously bad.
Under no circumstances will Republicans control the Senate.
If Johnson does not die this unfortunate event makes no difference- the Dems still control the Senate.
If he does die and a replacement is appointed before the opening of the Senate the power-sharing agreement of the 107th Senate will be precedent.
The media is both sick and stupid.
