WASHINGTON (CNN) -- With Democrat's grasp of the Senate relying on the thinnest of margins, ultimate control of the chamber hung on the health of a South Dakota senator who underwent brain surgery Thursday morning. Sen. Tim Johnson of South Dakota was in critical condition, said David Boyd, a nursing supervisor at a George Washington University Hospital. Should Johnson not be able to complete his term, which ends in 2008, South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds, a Republican, would appoint his replacement, which could shift the balance of power in the Senate.

bttt if you please
I'll pray for him just as hard as I prayed for Sen. Paul Coverdell when he was stricken in office.
Prayers for a speedy recovery for Senator Johnson.
Very sad.
Dont all democrats suffer from brain hemorrhages?
I may not agree with him, but God be with him in his time of need.
The South Dakota constitution only allows the guv to name a replacement in the case of death or resignation. We pray that Johnson survives and recovers. If he is incapacitated, there will be tremendous pressure by the Dem leadership for him not to resign. Although the citizens of South Dakota deserve better, the Dem leadership does not care if they don't have one of their senators able to represent them.
As I recall, the last governor to name a replacement was in Georgia. A Dem named Democrat Zell Miller to the seat that was held by a Republican.
Yes, it does seem so. I find that leading the article with political ramifications (sp) is tasteless to say the least.
"congenital arteriovenous malformation" to be exact.
Prayers for a speedy recovery and retirement.
My prayers go out to him and his family, I know what they are going through. Last month I spent a couple of days in ICU for internal bleeding. I didn't find out till later that my family slept in the chairs and on the tile floor of the waiting room when visiting hours were over.
As was the case with Imus and crew, while chatting with "expert on all things" Bob Schieffer an hour or so ago.
"Freepers, continue to pray."
Thanks for the class shown in these sad circumstances, Freepers. That's why I have such high regard for the folks here.
Those of you who are wives like me, will feel great sympathy for Sen Johnson's wife right now. She must be so scared.
We also admire his son's service in the military and hope, for his sake, that the prognosis for his Dad is good.
I am praying for the Senator and his family as we speak.
It seems survivable and recoverable. It will take time though. A co-workers wife suffered an anurysm about 6 months ago. She is 65 and is back at her job. She has some weakness in an arm and her speech is not comepletely back but she is functioning.
Ditto
I know of no reason not to hope for the best for this man. Politics should never override basic human sympathy for others to whom unfortunate things happen.
I've read comments on other sites where loonytooners believe Bush caused Johnson's health problems - just as he caused Paul Wellstone's plane to crash. Their juxtaposition of two incompatible thoughts regarding Bush seems to be that "he's too dumb to know that he's an evil genius".
Prayers for the Senator and his family.
