Wow, the MOTHER of all off topic straw man arguments.

Congratulations!

Kevorkian prolly got an erection while performing autopsies.

I worked for a pathologist for about 6 months. The ones I came in contact with were brilliant (it was at a major Boston hospital) but a little bit "off",if ya know what I mean.

Mind you that pathology is an essential specialty but it take a "special" kind of guy or gal to do it.

Why hasn't Kevorkian committee suicide already? That would be poetic and eternal justice.

A lot of people who came to him were just temporarily depressed and were not facing life-threatening situations.

Giving someone pain medication is not assisted suicide.

If you read Patricia Cornwell, you'd know my handle is from her Kay Scarpetta character, a pathologist and lawyer.

Go watch a family member die of cancer over the span of several pain-filled months,

Done it. Twice. Still don't think you have the 'right' to have people assist you in killing yourself.

That's not even to mention the fact that Kevorkian seemed to 'assist' old folks in dying that didn't seem to want to die according to anybody but Kevorkian.

It's a troublesome issue, and I'm still somewhat conflicted about it. But don't assume that people who are opposed to assisted suicide don't know about the pain people go through.

Many of the responses I have read are not to the subject of Kevorkian himself, but to the suffering of a loved one.

I, for one, am not praising him. Or lauding him. Or holding him up to be a hero.

I was responding to your post.

I did not mean to confuse you.

I have not seen anyone PRAISING Kevorkian.
If I missed that post, please show me.
For you to label all those who asked for his help as victims is simply incorrect.

What I have read is that many people want to be able to decide for themselves if they wish to finish their lives in pain or not.

Not everyone holds your religious views on suicide.

I don't know if he did...he probably didn't, seeing how he left behind a wife with advanced MS and twin 7-year old kids (my wife's stepmom and stepbrothers.)

But, one thing is for sure, the last few weeks of his life were devoid of dignity, and his passing was truly a relief of all the suffering he had the last few years.

Wow, you know he "got his jollies" doing that?
Were you there? Did you see him happy dancing around the body?

"I'm a little puzzled by all this talk about "dignity." Is this some sort of new human right like water and breathing? What dignity did Christ (the Son of God!) have during his brutal Passion and death on the Cross??..."

Dignity is found in your words. You write some serious prose.

It is my opinion that suicide is not necessarily an act of cowardice, and I have other reasons to hold Suzy Quzy in low regard. But thanks for chiming in anyway.

Just another Joe>If someone really wants to commit suicide they will find a way.

And often, that requires the assistance of someone else. Many patients are overly optimistic about what they will be able to do as they decline, and end up being unable to carry out their preferences without help of another.

Also, there are many disabled persons who require the assistance of others in their other activities. There should be similar allowance for this one.

Lunatic Fringe>Agreed. Especially terminally ill patients.

I never liked his methods or his need for press, but Kevorkian fought for what should be a basic human right. The right to die without needless suffering.

Yes, Kevorkian seems to be a very sick man, and although he fought for a good cause, his methods and reasons were seemingly misguided.

One of society's biggest problems today is the lack of respect for individuals and their rights and preferences and desires. It's sad to see people supporting the idea that government or other people know better than the individual, on an issue as personal as when and how to die.

Why must "terminally ill" be a requirement?

If an individual, a human being, a person, has pain that he doesn't wish to endure, why must he endure it just because the government says?

I think that anyone accused of murder should simply say, "He wanted to die with dignity." Who can prove him wrong?
