"If you know the enemy and you know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles," Sun Tzu wrote. "If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.".......... We listen to famous people because they are famous, not because they have any insight into the topic at hand. (The news media paid little attention to the opinions of retired generals Jack Keane, Wayne Downing and Barry McCaffrey, who met with the President Monday, though they have forgotten more about Iraq than the members of the ISG ever learned.)

I'll have to get back to any replies this afternoon.
We have been preached to that islam is a "religion of peace" while the evidence right in front of us tells us it ain't so. How are Americans supposed to understand the threat and even name the enemy when our leadership pumps out this kind of nonsense? We have an ongoing invasion coming from our southern border and we're told to adapt to it somehow.
We've already lost.
We have certainly been poorly served by many of our so-called leaders. However, I would rather that we, as a nation, have yet to begin the fight.
Our President is strong and has much resolved, but his family and he are too close to the Saudi royal family to understand the threat of Islam.
Also the fact that there are many fine muslims in the U.S., such as Dr. Zalmay Khalilzad (amb. to Iraq), further complicates the President's use of language in defining the enemy.
He was correct IMO in calling the enemy islamofascism but he is too afraid of the public and of his friends to use it with great conviction.
We will to wait until 2008 for a leader in this war who will clearly define the enemy.
Congressman Billybob
There is and always has been only one solution to this war: fight and keep fighting.
But the hard fighting has been put on hold for too long, and the drag effect is: waning popular support.
The fact that it has come to such a thing as the ISG is telling.
Until the enemy in Iraq is roundly smashed, we will continue to tread water.
Believe me, I do like your view and would hope for the sake of both my nation and my children that it's correct. What undermines my hope, though, is the fact that we have so many of the enemy already here amongst us - an unarmed, unresisted invasion force has walked into our country and is more than prepared to take up arms to kill us on our own streets. This war, when it finally happens, will bloody our non-combatant citizens right here. Ain't gonna be pretty.

Newt is the one to do it. ... imo.
