Sen. John Kerry, whose botched joke about U.S. troops in Iraq dealt a blow to his presidential ambitions, will travel to Iraq this weekend to meet with soldiers, political leaders and military officials.
"I've talked to plenty of guys who've come back from Iraq, who are there now, who understand exactly what happened," Kerry said of his joke in a telephone interview Tuesday with The Associated Press. "They laugh at it."
The Iraq stop will be part of a nine-day Mideast trip that includes stops in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Israel.
A week before the midterm elections, Kerry told a group of California students that individuals who don't study hard and do their homework would likely "get stuck in Iraq." He said he meant to say "get us stuck in Iraq," but the botched joke intended to criticize President Bush forced the senator to apologize and then lay low for the remaining days of the campaign.
The Massachusetts senator, who was widely criticized for the quip, said he'd be happy to apologize to any soldiers he encounters in Iraq who don't understand what happened.
"For anybody who misunderstood (the joke) or got only the White House presentation of it, I'd apologize, obviously," he said.

His visit will go over like a turd in the punchbowl.
But even if it was true, it shows he has a real deep-seated insecurity. Otherwise, why would he feel this need to talk to "plenty of guys" in Iraq about this lame "joke" of his, if they weren't the target of it in the first place, and to make sure that the AP knew that "plenty of guys" understood and laughed at it?
Oh, he is teaching them how to read and write? LOL
Caught that part too, huh?
Did Rockefeller do that also?
I surely pray that we lose not one man protecting this idiot.
Nope like always he invites himself, crashes to be exact using his title of Senator.
You know the warriors from MA are stuck going.
Rockefeller went to those places before the war..to tell them Pres. Bush had decided to invade Iraq...before Pres. Bush announced it.
After hearing what happened with Sen. Nelson today...it makes me even more mad that carry and Dodd are planning on going to Syria..and even Lebanon.
They are messing with foreign policy while we are at war..and they should not...IMHO.
....."revise and extend"....
Ha Ha, great thought. The trip means tha man knows he is in deep## ## and is taking a very stupid risk. One, only one soldier/marine needs to publicly humiliate him to destroy.
Joncary is an idiot for taking the risk.
...... Maybe he'll ride around in a tank.....
How about a kaki vest? I'll bet he wears one of those vests correspondents wear to look official on foreign assignment.
Bubba wore one last week when he was somewhere. He was cock of the walk in his vest.
My computer has been down the last couple days .. what happen?
I sure hope the press monitors every where he goes, I half expect him to make a 'we are in charge now' call to old Saddam on this anniversary day.
Sen. Bill Nelson met today with Syrian dictator ASSAD..and has told reporters that Assad said he would be willing to work with the US to help Iraq...RIGHHHHHHHHHT!!
Anyway...Jon Kyl was on Neil Cavuto today really angry about this...saying that as a Senator he doesn't have the right to go to Syria and "do foreign policy"...
Tony Snow was asked about it today..and he said that Pres. Bush is NOT happy that dems are going to Syria to discuss this ...and that there is supposedly a whole contingent that plan on going over there and negotiating...
THEY say that they are just following what the ISG report SAID to do...blech
Just wanted to tell you that on my local CBS news it said that jon carry was planning on not just meeting with "some" troops in Iraq...but THE troops that wrote that big message with the misspelled letters....
I hope they refuse to see him...
Kyl is right .. and Nelson is pulling a Jimmy Carter with North Korea
