I spent time in Michigan and was married to a Michigander whose mother was from the UP. Everyone had an 'accent' to my east coast ears. I'm surprised I didn't picked up any Midwest-ness.

No fair. Coke wasn't an option or I'd have chosen it.

Wow, GREAT map, and I can attest to the accuracy in several locations.
We got a kick out of learning to say "pop" instead of Coke when we moved up to Ohio. We said "pop" over and over again on the way home from school one afternoon, and giggled like crazy. We were bound and determined to (try to) fit in, linguistically at least! Except when I came home for visits and returned full of "reckons" and "ya'lls", lol!
btw, to anyone wondering, here's how it goes: "I want a Coke." "What kind?" "Orange." "OK" -- it works! :o)
