Bush’s Fast-Track Confirmation Plan Continues: May Nominate Muslim U.N. Ambassador
MND ^ | December 10, 2006 | Doug Powers

Posted on 12/10/2006 3:34:23 PM PST by Nasty McPhilthy

If President Bush hasn’t come up with this plan to get his nominees through a Senate that will soon be controlled by Democrats on purpose, it sure is one heck of an accident.

First, Bush nominated Robert Gates as Secretary of Defense. Gates’ answer to a single question from Carl Levin secured a landslide thumbs-up from the full Senate. When Gates was asked if the U.S. was winning the war in Iraq, he answered “no.” It was the two-lettered word heard ’round the partisan world.

As a result of the resounding success of this one instance of placating, either truthfully or cunningly, Senate Dems, I then recommended a similar approach for all future Bush nominees.

It could be that Bush is up to it again. Robert Novak believes that a Bush administration Muslim could be the front-runner to be nominated to replace the outgoing John Bolton as Ambassador to the United Nations:

Zalmay Khalilzad, who was announced this week as leaving as U.S. ambassador to Iraq, is the leading prospect to replace John Bolton as envoy to the United Nations.

President Bush was reported by aides as looking for someone who approximates Bolton’s combination of toughness and diplomatic skill and has tentatively decided on Khalilzad. A native of Afghanistan, he has served in government posts dating back to 1985 and is the highest-ranking Muslim in the Bush administration.

Another nominee on the fast-track! What high-profile Senate Democrat is going to have the brass donkeys to put the kibosh on a Muslim candidate for any post? I didn’t think so.

Nope, but it is to risky to put a muslim as an ambassador to an already anti semetic organization. I dont want to take the chance he is the least bit sympathetic to the "plight" of the pali's.

Do you trust a muslim is going to have the cajones to sit in the well of the U.N. security council and hammer these third world tin pot dicators.

While it would be refreshing, I doubt it would happen and dont want to risk it.

Khalilzad (currently US Ambassador in Iraq) is a good guy. I don't care whether he is Afghani by birth or not. He wouldn't be the worst choice. I have no problem at all with Khalilzad...

The longer Bush is in office, the less I like him.

Any guesses as to how long it will be before he teams with Ms. Nancy to pass the "comprehensive immigration" bill?

Khalizad is our Ambassador to Iraq and before it was our Ambassador to Afghanistan. He's a strong conservative and supporter of the President's foreign policy.

the Bolton card was played to the end - the votes aren't there, that's it. what do you want Bush to do, hold a gun to Chaffee's head during the vote?

I don't know enough about this new guy to comment.

FYI: Zalmay Khalilzad is regarded by ALL informed conservatives (vs reactionary bigots like several of the posters on this thread) as BEYOND Bolton-esque.

Many regard what Zalmay has been able to accomplish in Afghanistan and Iraq (re: constitutions/elections) as absolutely miraculous! He would be a PHENOMENAL ambassador to the UN . . . and Bolton would be the first to endorse his nomination!

Sorry, but I don't get your question...
But for what it is worth: I have a problem with defeatist, isolationist, liberal/socialist, terrorist-loving antisemites (in general and particularly in politics and power-positions).
Khalilzad is neither of them...
He is no observant Muslim at all (AFAIK) and obviously no Islamofascist. He has done good work in Iraq as our ambassador, so I fail to see the problem...

Whom do you want Bush to nominate? I think that he should nominate Sen. George Allen. He's a conservative member of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee. He was a U.S. rep. and governor.

The Nuclear option would have been nice! It also would have been a shot in the arm to the base. Bolton had 58 votes. and the dems did what they have done for 6 years obstruct.
