If President Bush hasnt come up with this plan to get his nominees through a Senate that will soon be controlled by Democrats on purpose, it sure is one heck of an accident.
First, Bush nominated Robert Gates as Secretary of Defense. Gates answer to a single question from Carl Levin secured a landslide thumbs-up from the full Senate. When Gates was asked if the U.S. was winning the war in Iraq, he answered no. It was the two-lettered word heard round the partisan world.
As a result of the resounding success of this one instance of placating, either truthfully or cunningly, Senate Dems, I then recommended a similar approach for all future Bush nominees.
It could be that Bush is up to it again. Robert Novak believes that a Bush administration Muslim could be the front-runner to be nominated to replace the outgoing John Bolton as Ambassador to the United Nations:
Zalmay Khalilzad, who was announced this week as leaving as U.S. ambassador to Iraq, is the leading prospect to replace John Bolton as envoy to the United Nations.
President Bush was reported by aides as looking for someone who approximates Boltons combination of toughness and diplomatic skill and has tentatively decided on Khalilzad. A native of Afghanistan, he has served in government posts dating back to 1985 and is the highest-ranking Muslim in the Bush administration.
Another nominee on the fast-track! What high-profile Senate Democrat is going to have the brass donkeys to put the kibosh on a Muslim candidate for any post? I didnt think so.
a simple majority or tie brings it out of commitee
Why, then, does he bother to define himself as "muslim"?
we don't have that. Chaffee and all the Dems, yields a negative recommendation.
Voinovich bailed the first time around, Chaffee this time. and the Dems held solid.
Maybe because he was born one, and hasn't changed his religion? Anyway, where did he explictly pronounce his muslimness as being hyper-important?
I judge him not by his "religion" or ethnicity but by what I know of him and his actions and deeds. He has done a helluva job in Iraq (and Afghanistan), and has contributed his part in the War on Terror. He is strong on foreign policy, a real hawk and would be great choice for UN Ambassador.
Bolton not be nominated is the great shame of the republicans, what a disgrace.
I know if it was a dem congress and they wanted him they would of had him.
Pres Bush might just be better off without the spinelss 109th congress
Elections have consequences, are "they" still glad they stood home, nancy, chucky and harry are.
Well, you have to admit... it would be kinda fun to watch.
It's what true conservatism is all about.
/s/
A strong conservative freedom loving Muslim would be an ideal candidate for this position.
Have to agree.
Reagan should never backed down from Tip.
1. Why should we trust any Muslim? 2. He sure as hell better not be sworn in on a Koran.
Agreed. He may have a little more credibility at the UN because of this background (trying to say nicely that there are racists at the UN too) and I have heard him be very articulate about American interests.
You never know. I don't know anything about this guy. He could be a great pick. Better to wait and see before passing judgement on him.
If it's Mansoor Ijaz, I will go along with this pick.
He is a good American.
He warns us and keeps us informed of the jihadanazi's actions.
YGBSM!
Zalmay Khalilzad has served as our ambassador to Afghanistan and Iraq in the last five years. The man has been risking his life daily in Iraq and previously in Afghanistan. The man deserves our most gratitude for his great service. We should be honored that a man of his caliber will serve as our UN ambassador.
