Congressman William Jefferson has been re-elected to Congress, according to WWL-TV election analyst Greg Rigamer.
With two-thirds of the vote counted, Jefferson had a 6,000-vote lead over challenger Karen Carter.
"I'm a little worried about what this is going to say to the nation," said City Councilwoman Cynthia Hedge-Morrell, a Carter supporter.
Jefferson was forced into the runoff against a fellow Democrat when he failed to win 50 percent of the vote in a crowded open multiparty primary. His opponent, state Rep. Karen Carter, is seeking to become the first black woman from Louisiana elected to Congress.
Jefferson, 59, has been handicapped by a wide-ranging investigation into allegations that he took bribes including $90,000 allegedly found in his freezer during an FBI raid -- from a company seeking lucrative contracts in the Nigerian telecommunications market. He has not been charged with any crime and denies any wrongdoing.
The scandal turned the race into a debate largely divided along racial lines, an age-old dynamic in this city that has intensified since Hurricane Katrina displaced large numbers of blacks and upended their demographic and political dominance.
Whites, who overwhelmingly voted for Carter in the primary and have been her most enthusiastic financial backers, believe a Jefferson win would confirm this city's image as corrupt and untrustworthy as it asks the nation to fund its recovery from Katrina.
Very true.
Oh...how is this???
I saw a blurb on the Fox ticker...
POTUS candidate, and GOP Senator, Sam Brownback is spending the night in a Louisiana Prison...to bring attention to the bad prison conditions...and to push for more faith-based prisons..to give prisoners hope.
How about that one??
The open primary system in Louisiana is what is causing these idiotic races: Landrieu v. Nagin; Jefferson v. Carter. For some reason, it seems to continuously matchup the worst two possible candidates and then give us the worst result. Save for Vitter winning in 2004.
There should have been a less corrupt candidate to run in the primaries, right?
For real! If so Brownback is a weirdo.
What are they smoking in Louisiana? Or perhaps there must be something in the water that causes that "stupid gene" to mulitiply? My guess he just bought a BIGGER freezer. Cha-ching for him. Yes, an inditement is going to be delicious.
Okay...now I understand.
Vitter seems okay...I heard he might run for Governor against Blanco...is that true?
No...sorry, I think it was Jindal??
I am confused, but I thought I had heard that one of them was going to try to beat out Blanco.
Here's what it says..."Democrats...especially black Democrats can be as corrupt as they wanna be because their sonstiuents are corrupt.

They have been running that message on the ticker all evening...
Go figure..campaign stunt?
This is the first time I don't care.
Jefferson's now Grandma's problem.
If the country truly wanted more ethical government, they sure made some wrong choices.

mmmmmmm,,,,,,,Let Me See,,,,I Know !!!,,Weld The Door Shut!
LOL;0),,,Caught One Of Em' Anyway,hehehehehe...
The only one happier than Pelosi is Dennis Hastert.
This is the most stunning election result this year.
New Orleans City Councilman Oliver Thomas said it better than anyone else. "People are watching this election all around the country and I can only imagine what they are thinking. It will be very difficult to go back to them and ask them to trust us with the money we need here."
Indeed.
I understand, but what I had more in mind was the outpouring of compassion that I saw from Texans, especially Houstonians, who received the New Orleans evacuees with open arms.
I volunteered at the Astrodome relief center for Katrina victims, but I wouldn't participate again knowing what I know now about the political culture in New Orleans judging by this election. I doubt I'm the only Texan who will react this way to the reelection of a crook like William Jefferson (D-LA).
This is a real black eye for Louisiana and the Democrats.
Campaign Stunt for sure. Brownback became Roman Catholic in 2002, which strikes me as weird for a man of his age and experience.
Hey, Cynthia. You should know your constituents better than that. Their views can be summed up best by the saying:
"Nobody cares who's driving the bus to the Welfare Office, as long as the ride is free."
Jindal is running against Blank-o in 2007 for Governor. It is inconceivable that he loses. If he does, I officially give up.
I am planning on taking some time off in 2007 to work/volunteer full time for Jindal.
One of the other dirty little secrets about tonights election, is that it is more than likely that LA-02 will be the seat eliminated after the census in 2010. It remains to be seen if it will be combined with Jindal's district or Melancon's. Either way, it should do quite a bit to dillute the white liberal vote and the poor black vote.
For an Orleans Parish conservative, this election was meanignless. Other than the fact that white liberals are incensed right now; (How can the blacks be so ignorant that they didn't vote for our black candidate) may be more so than after Nagin's re-election. And I would be lying, if I told you I wasn't laughing my ass off right now.
LOL...good catch CM...
We couldn't get WM. Jefferson in prison..but we got Brownback...
And, to show you how stupid the GOP is...he went voluntarily!!
He seems kind of odd to me... but, even more so after this story.
