Jefferson Re-elected (Democrats re-elect crook)

Congressman William Jefferson has been re-elected to Congress, according to WWL-TV election analyst Greg Rigamer.

With two-thirds of the vote counted, Jefferson had a 6,000-vote lead over challenger Karen Carter.

"I'm a little worried about what this is going to say to the nation," said City Councilwoman Cynthia Hedge-Morrell, a Carter supporter.

Jefferson was forced into the runoff against a fellow Democrat when he failed to win 50 percent of the vote in a crowded open multiparty primary. His opponent, state Rep. Karen Carter, is seeking to become the first black woman from Louisiana elected to Congress.

Jefferson, 59, has been handicapped by a wide-ranging investigation into allegations that he took bribes – including $90,000 allegedly found in his freezer during an FBI raid -- from a company seeking lucrative contracts in the Nigerian telecommunications market. He has not been charged with any crime and denies any wrongdoing.

The scandal turned the race into a debate largely divided along racial lines, an age-old dynamic in this city that has intensified since Hurricane Katrina displaced large numbers of blacks and upended their demographic and political dominance.

Whites, who overwhelmingly voted for Carter in the primary and have been her most enthusiastic financial backers, believe a Jefferson win would confirm this city's image as corrupt and untrustworthy as it asks the nation to fund its recovery from Katrina.

For your edification, LA-02 is the majority black district in Louisiana. It combines the poorest areas of Jefferson Parish and Orleans.

Karen Carter was a horrendous candidate. She supported gay marriage, late term abortions, Hillary's healthcare plan and economically was to the left of Stalin.

As it stands now, Carter is winning in Orleans Parish by a vote of 52-48. However she is getting trounced in Jefferson Parish (which is actually 50-50 white-black) 73-27.

I live in uptown New Orleans. I voted for Bill Jefferson today for several reasons. Pelosi would have welcomed Carter with open arms. It would have been one more vote for the far left socilaist agenda.

Jefferson being indicted in office will be a great boon to the GOP. And I am not the only conservative who thinks so.

Furthermore, I love denying the white liberals in this city any power whatsoever.

That is just like the disclosure of Bush's old dwi before the 2000 election. I am sure these tactics helped in some races, particularly with squishy supporters. Probably the war was the bigger issue, but the GOP was not aggressive enough in pointing out what grifting scum the Dems are.

I observed more and more blatant media bias leading up to this election that ever before. The Grand Old Party better make a supreme effort to unscrew themselves or we will be looking at a disaster in 08!

Carter concedes
From the ABC26 newsroom:

Don't let the applause, bellows of support, and Carter's composed demeanor deceive you, Carter's speech was a concession.

Karen Carter made her concession speech at 10:20 and in doing so, capped off what was one of the most interesting and hyped political races in recent years.

ABC26 Political Analyst Jeff Crouere says it was Carter's failure to get out the white vote that got her in the end. Crouere sums the election results as a loss for Carter not a win for Jefferson.

She lost the white vote by appearing in a Katrina documentary that bashed some local white sheriff as "inhumane". He put out all stops for Jefferson.

That may have been the Police Chief of the town across the river that put up a blockade on the bridge to stop the evacuees from NO coming into his town......

Another consequence of the outcome of this election will be a drop in charitable giving for victims of Katrina.

Why would any conservative offer charity to a community that chooses to reelect a crook like William Jefferson (D-LA) as their representative? It’s a lost cause unless one knows personally who will receive the donation and for what purpose it will be used. Any other type of general donation to New Orleans is folly judging by the results of this election.

They don't need charitable donations...the Fed. Govt. will be taking care.

FEMA has been ordered to continue paying for housing..and last night, a bill passed with mucho more $$$$$ for Katrina damage.

The problem is....that Jefferson was in a run-off at all.

There should have been a less corrupt candidate to run in the primaries, right?
