A 22-year-old Rockford man has been charged with plotting to set off hand grenades in an alleged terror attack at a popular Rockford mall during the busy holiday season, federal authorities announced today.
Derrick Shareef, of Rockford, has been charged with attempting to maliciously damage and destroy a building and to use a weapon of mass destruction against persons or property in the U.S., federal authorities said.
According to an FBI affidavit, Shareef met with an undercover federal agent in a Rockford area parking lot to trade stereo speakers for a handgun and four hand grenades that he intended to use at the CherryVale shopping mall at 7200 Harrison Ave., just off the junction of Interstate Highways 90 and 39 in the city.
The mall, with about 130 retail stores, was one of several potential targets, which also included courthouses, city hall and several government buildings, the complaint alleges. Sources said there was no imminent threat from the attack, describing it as more of a hopeful plan.
Shareef also allegedly told an acquaintance who actually was cooperating with the FBI that he wanted to commit acts of "violent jihad" against civilians.
Shareef told an undercover informant that he wanted to attack a courthouse in DeKalb County and "smoke a judge," according to the complaint.
"[T]he courthouse in DeKalb where I be going every month …You go in there and you clock the first three [guards] at the door that they got, and you up in there, you know what I'm saying…I just want to smoke a judge," the complaint quoted Shareef as saying.
The informant then asked Shareef when he wanted to stage the attack.
"What do you think? I like the holiday season," the complaint quotes him as saying.
They have to get their soymilk from somewhere....
"Sure, but from a grocery store after all the gas has been siphoned out. Those soybean fields are still gaseous I tell ya :> Haven't you ever smelled one after fertilizing? It's the beans; what else could it be? Hmmmmmmmmm?"

Anyway, I just love spoofin' these metro-stuck journalist wannabes. Anyone who writes for a living, and doesn't do enough research to know that Rockford is NOT a suburb of Chicago, deserves grief. But this is NOT a diss on Freepers who don't live in the area and accept such claptrap as fact. I wonder if these jughead writers have ever been outside of the Chicago metropolitan area (except to fly in/out of O'Hare).
Dallas, Houston, Salt Lake City, even in the Bay area and LA area when I lived there, the numbers of armed citizens is large. In all of those areas you would see people using those arms in such a scenario...and not to convert to Islam, but to use them to turn those Islamic terrorists into good Muslims.

The problem I have with the "Lone Nut" designation, is that they all seem to fall from the same tree. Might be time to cut that particular tree down.
Based on the ghetto vernacular used in the quote, my guess is that he is one of those jailhouse converts to the religion of "peace", and shareef is not the name on his birth certificate. Either way, he should be made into an example with a life sentence. But, in a liberal haven like Chicago, it is unlikely.

At least ABC is reporting it. This story has been completely ignored on CNN's website. There is nothing about it at all!
It's one thing that they are totally left-wing biased, but to not mention this dangerous situation?
The American people NEED to know about these types of stories, it could help people become more aware of the types of threats that these animals really are ... yet CNN ignores it? There are some Americans who only watch CNN & MSNBC and to bury an important story like this is not just disgraceful, it could, ultimately, get people killed. Is their left-wing bias so deep that they don't care if innocent men, women and children are blown up while shopping?

Are we to believe that he only told two people, who coincidently were associated with law enforcement?
How many people did he tell, who choose not to report him? What are they planning? What turned him radical in the first place? And was he the only one turned?
When Meir Kahane was assassinated, the gunman was also said to have been a lone wolf.
Until the pack, missing their lone wolf, attempted to take down the WTC in 1993.
But he most likely got the prompting in a mosque - knowing full well that some ingnoramous would make an attempt thereby causing hate and discontent.

Absolutely right, Bcsco. I live just south of Chicago, and have to commute to Rockford occasionally for work. It's about a two hour drive west, kinda close to the Quad Cities area, and about 10 - 15 miles south of the Wisconsin border. I don't think it's too much of a point, though. Well, maybe, if you consider that the media can't get even the simplest of facts straight. But this story obviously will get global attention to some extent, and for someone overseas to hear a terrorist tried to take out Rockford has nowhere near the impact to a European, or even some Americans for that matter, than a suburb of Chicago. It's the press, remember? Any chance they get to add some extra "oomph" to a story they will take. As for why he chose Rockford....well, it is pretty darn populated, not like it was, but there are some very large corporations that have manufacturing plants and headquarters based in the area, Chrysler Automotive and Caterpillar probably being among the largest. I don't know for sure obviously, just throwing out whatever reason I can think of. Maybe he wanted to show they are gunning for us in every town, not just main cities....oh, finally, and quite possibly the most likely reason, Rockford is probably 1,000 times easier to pull something like that off and possibly get away with than Chicago.

I believe the perp is from Rockford. This occurred in Rockford because that's his home - his backyard. It's the Federal Attorney's office that's based in Chicago, thus that's where he was taken for arraignment. The FBI, however, does have an office in Rockford.
If you're South of Chicago, Rockford is possibly as far from the Quad Cities as you are from Rockford. The city is North-central Illinois; not North-western Illinois along the Mississippi River. I'm 80 miles straight West of Chicago at the junction of I-88 and I-39. To get to Rockford I go 30 miles straight North on I-39. To get to the Quad Cities I go 90 miles West-Southwest on I-88. It's on the Mississippi River. We have in-laws there. Thus, I'm directly South of Rockford a short distance, yet only about midway between Chicago and the Quad Cities.
