A 22-year-old Rockford man has been charged with plotting to set off hand grenades in an alleged terror attack at a popular Rockford mall during the busy holiday season, federal authorities announced today.
Derrick Shareef, of Rockford, has been charged with attempting to maliciously damage and destroy a building and to use a weapon of mass destruction against persons or property in the U.S., federal authorities said.
According to an FBI affidavit, Shareef met with an undercover federal agent in a Rockford area parking lot to trade stereo speakers for a handgun and four hand grenades that he intended to use at the CherryVale shopping mall at 7200 Harrison Ave., just off the junction of Interstate Highways 90 and 39 in the city.
The mall, with about 130 retail stores, was one of several potential targets, which also included courthouses, city hall and several government buildings, the complaint alleges. Sources said there was no imminent threat from the attack, describing it as more of a hopeful plan.
Shareef also allegedly told an acquaintance who actually was cooperating with the FBI that he wanted to commit acts of "violent jihad" against civilians.
Shareef told an undercover informant that he wanted to attack a courthouse in DeKalb County and "smoke a judge," according to the complaint.
"[T]he courthouse in DeKalb where I be going every month You go in there and you clock the first three [guards] at the door that they got, and you up in there, you know what I'm saying I just want to smoke a judge," the complaint quoted Shareef as saying.
The informant then asked Shareef when he wanted to stage the attack.
"What do you think? I like the holiday season," the complaint quotes him as saying.
Wow - this is extremely liberal use of the word "Chicago". They might as well refer to Bakersfield as "Los Angeles".
Oh no. It's Cindy Sheehan.
So maybe the psychos at the Huffington Post will retract their criticisms of non-urban anti-terror funding?
FYI:
Rockford IL is sometimes considered a far NW suburb of Chicago...
Is that you? You're looking good these days. ;)
All it's going to take is one lone jihadi who slips through the cracks and successfully blows himself up on a city bus or a train or what-have-you. Then they'll come out of the woodwork.
Yeah. Kinda reminds me of all the times they absolutely ruled out terrorism before the flames were even out.
Yeah. Too quick IMO.
nice post :)
Doesn't matter if his name is Bubba or Mohammed- if he was planning a terrorist attack, he should be dispatched to his maker asap with minimal waste of taxpayers money.
Strange, ABC's local affiliate seems to believe otherwise (reply #20).
The suspect -- who has been linked to al Qaeda
I'm sure they watched the guy long enough to determine he was a lone whacko. They get more points for bagging multiple terrorists, so they're not going to jump the gun if they think there's a better catch.
Still, just because you're acting on your own doesn't mean you weren't, say, encouraged towards extremism at your local mosque. As a random, whimsical example.
Oh. A "Youth" then?
Maybe it was in protective custody.
Arrrr!

BREAKING NEWS: Area Man Arrested In Alleged Terror Plot
POSTED: 11:16 am CST December 8, 2006
CHICAGO -- Authorities say a Chicago-area man is under arrest in connection with an alleged terrorist plot involving an area shopping mall.
An indictment was reportedly unsealed in federal court on Friday, allegeing the plot on an unnamed shopping mall.
The man was scheduled to appear in federal court around noon.
I hope it wasn't Woodfield Mall in Shaumburg. I shop there whenever I go to Chicago. A friend and I were planning on heading there next weekend.
Probably not, but not impossible. Think of Richard Reid.
OTOH, think of all those in BJ's administration who aided and abetted AQ. None of them was a towelhead.
Think of those who laundered funds for AQ in Washington DC.
Clean cut, all American boys.
