REMNANT OF 1984 ELECTION SURFACES Found: Mysterious ballot box from '84
Charlotte Observer/ The Herald ^ | December 7 | JEFFERSON GEORGE

Posted on 12/07/2006 3:20:44 PM PST by PghBaldy

GASTONIA - Would Ronald Reagan's re-election have been even more of a runaway, or would Walter Mondale have claimed another precinct?

That's one question after a bizarre discovery Wednesday in Gastonia: a locked metal box full of ballots from the 1984 election.

The box was sitting behind a house off West Mauney Avenue when Jim Rudisill found it.

Rudisill is having the former mill house rehabilitated and said people occasionally break into it at night to sleep there. They sometimes take things from the house, he said, but they rarely leave anything.

Given Reagan's overwhelming 1984 landslide, it's good for a few jokes and nothing more. But imagine if these were from the 2000 election in Florida?

What's remarkable is that the box contains 1,6878,121 ballots marked for Mondale, 1 more than the difference separating Mondale and Reagan. Howard Dean is crying fraud and calling for a re-vote.

No doubt Conyers would be calling for Reagan's posthumous impeachment.

Makes you wonder how reliable our election process is.

How much error is there during a typical election? 5%, 10%?

Many races these days are within a couple of percent.

Then again, how many times did the biased election judges recount the ballots in Florida in 2000? Each time they found in favor of Bush.

Nothing to add, except to say I miss Reagan.

A whole lot.

In a re-vote between a dead Reagan and a very-much-alive Fritz Mondale, who do you think would win? I think Reagan would probably still win in a landslide.

How does a box of ballots just "disappear" anyway?

What I wouldn't do for another man like Reagan to be President.

They must have already been counted, because otherwise somebody would notice in that election that nobody voted in a precinct.

My Dad was an election judge some time back.

He told me of a story where a truck delivering ballots took a corner too sharp and dumped a bunch of ballot boxes all over the street. The ballots spilled out all over the street and many were lost. Nothing was mentioned to the public about the incident.

Also, he told me that he learned that they don't count the absentee ballots unless an election is close. Don't know how true this is.

Too bad there isn't more accountability. People assume that the election process is fair. It may be totally screwed up.

a very-much-alive Fritz Mondale,

If he is alive he can give thanks to his diet of Tana leaves.

Who cares about a NC district... The great Reagan could have challenged Minnesota and achieved a near sweep of the country (forget ever getting near a majority in DC) but he decided it wasn't worthwhile challenging the Gopher State.

What I wouldn't do for another man like Reagan to be President.

You mean a guy who would grant amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants? Or who would sit idle while the deficit ballooned?

If so, you already have your man.

BTW--try remembering Reagan's 11th Commandment.
