Bloomberg sues 12 gun dealers in five states

The city sued 12 gun dealers in five states for allegedly selling weapons that were traced to crimes committed in New York.

The New York City Police Department has traced more than 300 confiscated guns sold by these dealers between 1994 and 2002, said Mayor Michael Bloomberg in announcing the lawsuit. The dealers are located in Georgia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia.

The lawsuit is part of the mayor's pledge to crack down on gun dealers whose weapons wind up being used to commit crimes in New York. In May, he sued 15 dealers in an effort to get illegal weapons off the streets.

Thursday's suit names Gwinnett Pawn Shop, Toccoa Pawn & Variety and Hot Shots Jewelry & Pawn in Georgia; Miller Rod & Gun in Ohio; John's Gun & Tackle Room in Pennsylvania, Coastal Pawn Shop, Dick's Pawn, Rooks Sale & Service and Trader World in South Carolina and Bob Moates Sport Shop, Franklin Rod & Gun Shop and Town & Country Pawn Shop in Virginia.

All 12 dealers named in the new suit sold a gun to a team of undercover investigators, who wore hidden cameras during a sting operation. Since May, six gun dealers have settled with New York City after they were targeted in the original suit.

Mr. Bloomberg also launched a subway ad campaign that warns riders about higher mandatory sentences for illegal gun possession. The state Legislature passed a bill raising the mandatory minimum sentence to three-and-a-half years from one year. The ads will be displayed in 2,044 subway cars, and include a photo of prison cell.

" Chicago's Mayor Daley tried that and lost. "

The Council of Mayors gathering is where they all get together to come up with new gun control (and tax) proposals to unleash on the public. Just another unknown bureaucratic liberal love-fest!

You cant just drive to TX from NYC and buy a gun from a licensed dealer

IIRC, they get locals to fill out the ATF 4473 simultaneously making it look like the purchase is obviously a straw purchase for someone else, i.e. the accompanying private investigator.

Except where local laws prohibit it, it is legal to purchase a long gun in person from an out of state FFL dealer without first transferring the gun to an FFL dealer in your home state. Apart from that very narrow exception, any firearm purchased from out of state must be shipped to an FFL dealer in your home state. It is not legal to ship a firearm to a private individual in another state who does not possess an FFL.1

The way an interstate sale usually works is that the buyer and the seller agree on terms. Then each must find an FFL dealer in her own home state. The seller takes the firearm to her FFL dealer. That dealer makes certain the sale is legal at the selling end, and then ships the firearm to the buyer's FFL dealer. Occasionally, if it is legal in both the buyer's and the seller's state, the seller may be able to ship directly to the buyer's FFL dealer and avoid using an FFL at the selling end.

When the buyer goes in to pick up her purchase, her FFL dealer makes certain the sale is legal on the buying end. The buyer must comply with all the other legal requirements of buying a gun from an FFL dealer: 4473 Form, NICS check, state-issued permission slips, additional required purchases or taxes, and any other local requirements that might apply.

Amen to that. I like to think of them as the "vote for the RINO or we might get Hillary paniced scardy cat bunch".

Personally, the more that I see that the less inclined I am to listen to that kind of white-flag bull dookey.

I would love to see the Attorney General of an aggrieved state put together a force and do a body snatch of the man. It would certainly resolve the issue of state sovereignty in an expedited manner.

Do these people ever go after real crooks? When was the last time you heard of a lib attacking organized crime? Or bank robbers? Car thieves even? Ya know, a lot of crimes are committed with cars. Big Auto has a lot of money. A smart lawyer could make a good living off of that one. I've noticed some of these car companies insert the word "escape" or "get away" very suspiciously in their commercials. And why do we need cars that are capable of traveling at such high speeds? Something very fishy going on there.

Yes, the crime is the out of state cop misrepresenting his status for the purpose of buying a gun.

Those guys are toast if they ever go anywhere else than New York for the rest of their lives.

We've had New York cops come down here for conventions ~ they are generally misbehaved ~ tear up hotel rooms ~ give the hookers AIDS ~ pour their drinks all over the place.

Definitely not a nice bunch (if you know what I mean).

Stories like this only serve to remind me of all the grief I take from New York Freepers for even suggesting that New York City is a f#&%ing police state.

It's like the German people in WW II saying "But we don't live in a fascist police state. Look how clean the streets are. And the trains run on time!".

Most of them have no idea what life outside the toilet bowl is like.

Bloomberg openly endorsed John Kerry...

Rudi openly endorsed Cuomo and tried to defeat Pataki. He stated that Clinton's policies were essentially the policies he believed in.

"If those idiots in New York were arming law abiding citizens gun crimes would decrease. Of course those fools go after the dealers because they are scared of real criminals and catching them."

I agree. The whole "gun control" debate is a liberal smokescreen for their tacit support of criminals. None of the gun control groups--not one ever proposed stronger sentencing, reduced appeals and longer prison terms. The only laws they advocate are for law-abiding people.

When crime gets bad enough, people will be more acceptable of a police state. It worked for Hitler.
