A longtime aide to Jimmy Carter has resigned from the Carter Center think tank, calling the former president's new book on Israel and the Arabs one-sided and filled with errors.
Kenneth Stein, the Carter Center's first executive director and founder of its Middle East program, sent a letter that bluntly criticized the book to Carter and others.
Stein wrote that the book, "Palestine: Peace, Not Apartheid," was replete with factual errors, material copied from other sources and "simply invented segments," according to an excerpt of the letter published by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Deanna Congileo, Carter's spokeswoman, said the former president stands by the book.
Stein, who is also director of the Institute for the Study of Modern Israel at Emory University, did not immediately return a call Wednesday.
Carter issued a brief statement saying that Stein had not been actively involved with the center for more than 12 years and was not involved with the new book. Carter did not directly address Stein's allegations.
It is not the first time Carter and Stein have disagreed over Middle East policy, said Douglas Brinkley, a professor of history at Tulane University and the author of the 1988 Carter biography, "The Unfinished Presidency."
"They've never been on the same page in the Middle East. They've been in an almost constant state of disagreement," Brinkley said. Stein "doesn't trust the Palestinians as much as Carter."
Brinkley said he has read Carter's new book but would not address Stein's accusations.
Carter is an anti-semite and a racist. Time more people stood up and spoke out.
The wrong Carter brother died young. The older Jimmah gets, the more obnoxious he becomes, but there's always a book mill that will let him publish his screeds.
Carter won't admit anything.
Trust?
The Palestinians?
To say nothing of the wrong Kennedy brothers!
Carter used to carry his own luggage on and off planes to show he was a 'common' man but the truth is, it was empty as the suit he wears.
Jimmah is the worst EX PRESIDENT of the USA and is making Useless Grant look good in comparison!
This ought to ensure that Jimmy will get the Nobel for literature, also (his accomplishments in that field about as legitimate as they are in "peace").
Grant was a failure as a President....but....his memoirs are considered to be one of the great works of American literature and the greatest war memoir since Caesar wrote his Gallic Wars some 2,000 years earlier, in Latin.
So, in a sense, yes, Grant's retirement was a miserable failure as he was broke and cancer ridden. But...his retirement was also arguably the most successful of any US President in history. History has its ironies, I suppose.
At least Grant did something useful before he became President. In his memoirs he details his military service, but leaves out his Presidency, which is just as well.
Very true and a nice history lesson. My son just finished studying the Civil War for his social studies class. Jimmah remains a uniquely terrible ex president who doesn't know when to shut up!
I was just thinking the exact same thing.
It's too bad he'll probably always be insulated from the knowledge of exactly how despicable a large segment of humanity finds him.
I think Jimmah Carter has invented most of his whole life....
He is such a disgrace to America.
He is an excellent example of "the good die young".
Sounds as tho his sweater has finally totally unraveled!
Trust?
The Palestinians?
Mindwarping, isn't it?
But Carter always has "America's" best interests in mind. Always.
