World: NATO Prepares For Energy Wars

PRAGUE, December 5, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- During the recent NATO summit in Riga, U.S. Senator Richard Lugar urged the alliance to declare that an energy boycott of any member be seen as an act of coercion against all members of the alliance and one that requires a collective response.

U.S. Senator Richard Lugar urged NATO to update its charter. "We are used to thinking in terms of conventional warfare between nations, but energy could become the weapon of choice for those who possess it," he said.

Lugar warned the opening session of the NATO meeting that "it may seem to be a less lethal weapon than military force, but a natural-gas shutdown to a European country in the middle of winter could cause death and economic loss on the scale of a military attack."

Yessss!!!! Do it! A decision like this would make an excellent Christmas gift.

Turn off the money spigot and you shut off the sources of Muslim terror...at least most of it.

Americans MUST participate in the sacrifice our heroes and their families are making: paying $5 a gallon or more is a small price to pay compared to what our forefathers have done in time of war.

The rainy season is ending and I'm getting ready to bike commute again. That'll help a little.

Without the United States NATO has NO troops to fight any war.

The British have a Division. Belgium - NO one to fight. Netherlands 1 division in reserve. Germany 2 divisions. France - who knows but not many. Italy 2 divisions. Poland 3 divisions (?). Spain NO one to fight. Portugal unknown. Greece 1 division (?). Turkey NO fight outside Turkey. Denmark 3 battalions. Luxembourg 1 battalion. Norway 1 division. And most are reserve and are not ready to fight so how is NATO going to fight any war without the United States?

nato? her days have long passed with th changing threats and needs to be repurposed or disbanded. The bulk of these asses are not prepared to fight for freedom as evidenced by their actions in afghanistan......so a change in definition is necessary.

Good going RobRoy!

Even though I have cut back on driving thanks to the technology of the internet, I am not ready to bike in WNY winters!

But if push comes to shove I will gladly.

NATO now basically means us. Europe has scarcely any functional troops left, the French are busy beating up small African countries and making them safe for Islam, and England is busy changing over to the new Chamberlain administration.

If Europe won't take care of its own security, I don't think it's our job to do it. As it is, the chief reason they are such basket cases is that we have accustomed them to letting mummy take care of them in every contingency while they indulge themselves. So, what can you expect?

I wonder what he means to be the reciprocal measure? A military assault or a NATO-wide economic moves?

Is it all reserves? I heard Russia has 100 divisions and 5000 tanks each day but 3 mlns of reservists more who served in military and has military trainings. Seem like Russia ables to crush NATO each day:))).

NATO would be stuuuupid to try to attack Russia
Somehow I doubt that Lithuanian and hungarian divisions are match for Russians.

EU must see te truth, no gas. Either zou go to Arabs and become Dhimmi, either zou rty to strike a dela with Russians... Russians won`t chop zour head of...

Unfortunatley Eleni,
Lugar was having Russia on his mind that he would like to attack.
NATO is obsolete and just won`t die.
NATO showed useless in Iraq, Afghanistan...
And last guy that tried to applz his "Energz needs" in Russia left his army at Stalingrad 1943...

You are right Kronos----I jumped the gun on that. Stupid Lugar...he misses the forest for the trees.

Stuck in the Cold War...swatting flies while the hyenas area ravaging the earth.

As for NATO - one question - why does it refuse to die? It might have in the 90s had we not elected the war criminal Clinton.

We need a new alliance of nations fighting terrorism...the islamic kind. As long as people refuse to see islam as a dangerous political ideology there is no hope of defeating them. How long will it take for the awareness to become military policy...

As you said, Kronos, Lugar's proposal is anti-Russian, pure and simple! Russophobia and anti-Orthodoxy rears its very ugly head once again!!!!

Not only do we need to strike energy deals with Russia, but we need a Manhattan project to develop advanced energy technologies!! This will eliminate our fatal codependency on islam, and stop any New World Order adventures aimed at "controlling Caspian oil".

Harry Truman's NATO was good and necessary, and achieved its objectives without firing a shot in anger. But NATO, which was obsolete with the early 1990s fall of the Soviet Union, has morphed into a monster that only serves the NWO and islam. It should have been disbanded in 1993 or so.

As for me, I buy Russian gas (Lukoil/Getty) as much as possible, and almost never buy gas from outlets for the major oil companies. No islamic gasoline for me!!!!

I will do that as well. On another note: is it true that the so-called Russian spy Litvinenko announced that he was a muslim on his deathbed? I am not surprised given that he worked for the Chechnyan terrorist.

A fitting end to a psychotic criminal.

Remove Germany, France, and Spain. They have already declared their neutrality.

I won't buy Lukoil. They buy oil from Venezuela, and I have problems with the current Russian regieme, which uses Lukoil money to build its military.

In order to guard against future aggression from the neo-Soviet Putin régime NATO is required, coupled with it's role in combating Islamic terrorists in Afghanistan.
