Best not to interject actual facts into hero-worship on FR... just let everyone fete him as a hero and move on. Of course you're right, but that's not what this thread will be abuot.

That I would agree with....he died trying to save them.....but they did not find his family because of him. Very sad.....I was pulling for the man too.

Geez, there's always some of you on these threads.

He died trying to save his family. Must you act like a jerk at a time like this?

Best to just say his attempts and efforts were heroic in nature. He died trying to do the right thing, even though he knew his odds were long.

Why do you say that? They stayed...he strayed.

(1) He came up with the idea of burning the car tires to send smoke signals.

(2) When help was not forthcoming he went out into the cold to try and find help.

Your comments are not only stupid, they're uninformed and uncharitable.

As a father who has dealt with 7 month old children, I would be fearful of what would happen when my wife ran out of breast milk.

A child that small can die of dehydration very quickly without sustenance.

Maybe in two days.

He knew they were racing against the clock and he went to find help across some very treacherous terrain.

I hope you grow up one day.

Great statement! It is easy to say "He should have done this and this because I would have." But, until that time comes no one really knows exactly what they will do in every situation.

Well, it is sad. Prayers for the family and rescuers themselves.

Hopefully, people will learn from this and be prepared when they go off the beaten path. I've heard people talk about going on long trips and describing it like they were simply driving to the local 7-11 or something. And folks, especially folks who are used to living in big urban areas, have to realize it can be a very, very dangerous world out there.

Where do you small people come from?

His motives were good. His decisions, however, were bad. It would have been better for all concerned if Mr. Kim had chosen to be a "coward."

And if not, then he should never have left the road.

It's not "small," it's real life. The lesson is that mother nature is not to be trifled with, especially in winter. She punishes "heroism" with death, unless it's tempered by commmon sense.

There is a time for criticism, which may be deserved, and this ain't it.

Let the family bury their dead, and show a little respect and compassion.

Never assume the maps are right, especially when driving in Winter. You have to research the route thoroughly, being prepared for any contingencies when driving in that neck of the woods.

Poor guy should have stayed with his family, even if they all perished

His attitude was that he would rather die trying to save his family than to sit and wait to die all together.

That's exactly what a husband and father is supposed to do.

word---if you were stuck, lost, really had no training in survival skills or outdoor living--he took a rational risk. Unfortunately he paid with his life. he is a hero.
