Live on cable now...
A fatally flawed consensus, however momentarily comforting, but which eases us down a path that leads to our ultimate destruction, is not something to be desired. This report, and the insane partisan propaganda-driven process which produced it, is such a "consensus".
I'll use my copy to line the bird cage.
She just declared it ok to do a partial birth abortion on Iraq and the War on Terror.
That's a brutally descriptive and effective way of putting it. You should email that to Rush.
The report calls for a full US withdrawal by the 1st quarter of 2008. Cut and run is the new US policy. And remember, incoming SecDef Gates was on the ISG.
"That seems to be our "leaders" primary concern these days when dealing with the psychopaths in the Middle East and elsewhere."
Don't it just break your heart? It makes me sick. I'm just done reading a few books about the early period of American Independence. They revealed in detail what the word "American" and "leader" used to mean: brave, principled, truthful, independent, fierce against foes, a trusted friend, self reliant, honorable, dutiful, loyal, willing to make sacrifices for freedom and his fellows, unyielding in the cause of liberty. How we have fallen!
Now we have Jesse Jackson, Britney Spears, Rap music, Hollywood and all the cowards, curs and traitors in the media, academia and government stifling these great values and replacing them with dishonor and every form of degradation. I'm not the crying type, but I feel like weeping over this state of things today of all days when I see that report and how it is received and trumpeted as a great occassion for the enemies of America.
It is only destructive if President Bush DOES what they suggest in this report...
From what I have seen, he won't.
Well, if you are an aging ex-hippie who wishes to relive your glory days of vitenam protests, a time you felt most relevant in the world because your shouts and curses actually led to the humiliation of this nation, then it means everything. It means you're still able to shout down the nation, support "social justice" around the planet, yadda yadda yadda. Of course that means the prostration of the US before it's enemies, but hey, we earned it, right?
The most selfish, shallow group of people ever. Unable to see past their own self interest (in this case, their need to feel important and to "make a difference") this group of jerks has risen to traditional power in politics and in the media and they are once again thrilled to see the US humiliated. The difference is that with our ill-conceived hasty withdrawl from Vietnam only led to millions of deaths of those other people way over there, this time it will certainly lead to chaos and death on our own shores eventually. But as lunch as Pinch Sulzberger feels good about himself, that's all that matters.
If they have their way, our soldiers will sneak out in the middle of the night, heads hanging, while massacres happen in Iraq (so they can say "See! Look what we caused!" And yes, I do beleive they take a smug satisfaction is seeing chaos and death when it justifies their world view) It's up to the President to prevent that, and find a way to maintain both our dignity and our national interests. I sincerely hope his recent proclivity to go-along to get-along doesnt come into play this time.
Thanks.
I just sent it now.
Pepsi, you are 100% right on this.
(except, diet coke is better)
But that is not who is the target of the report.
We know what the stakes are. We know who the players are.
The problem is that Joe Blow citizen has had their skull filled with media lies to win the last election and Iraq was a part of the list of lies. The report was designed to be hated by both the left and the right, it was aimed at the center and will perform a informational job to bring them into the decision process.
Bush has tried his best to do this, but his words, and now his reputation have been sullied. The masses of faceless people have been told we are losing Iraq and that the soldiers are dying for nothing. They believe it.
This report is a attempt to bring them back into the process, and should not be viewed by us as some sort of new attempt to undermine the president. He can use this to renew support, or at least buy some public patience as the situation in Iraq works it's self out in the fullness of time..
Time is what we need, and bush is being threatened by Congress who have control of the purse. We need a couple more years to show results.
If we don't get those years and that support, the damage done will be incalculable.
Bush knows that historians will be the ones to correct his record, so right now, his present reputation is not the issue. Success in Iraq is. he will do the things necessary to be successful and he needs time and congressional support of the troops to do it. Nothing else matters.
This report is a attempt to smooth feathers and get that support for a couple of years.
Well, to me joking and laughing while presenting this report will send a mixed message to the public.
Yup, where's Curt Welding today?
" He ought to go in there and kick ass .."
If I had a nickel for every person who has said this to me...most of them military and veterans of Iraq.
Something happened to President Bush this second term.
It's like the fight has been beaten out of him by the media and the Democrats. Beyond the normal wear and tear of the office, especially post 9/11.
He's very cautious in his words now and seems to pull a lot of punches.
No more Bring It On or Wanted Dead or Alive or appearances at the WTC rubble with the bullhorn.
VP Cheney still seems to maintained his attitude ,though. Too bad he's ruled out 08.
I think this was all intentional.
Of course it was intentional - that doesn't prevent it from being delusional as well.
The flaw in your reasoning is that this isn't happeneing in a vacuum - the whole world is watching, especially those who wish to destroy us. No matter how endlessly we prattle on about consensus and bi-partisanship, the only thing they will hear is that America is indeed, as Osama said, a paper tiger, as that we lack the will to oppose them over the long run. That IS the message we are currently broadcasting to the whole world, and it's being heard loud and clear.
That's true, an Iranian dominated Persian Gulf will present grave risks, particularly from a nuclear Iran.
What reasons are those? Every time I turn around, it seems, someone is yelling, "Negotiate with Iran and Syria!" But as yet no one can tell me how we are going to get them to stop meddling in Iraq. It's either carrots or sticks. We have tried carrots. If we pull out troops what sticks do we have?

"A photo-shoot last week of the co-chairmen by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz for Men's Vogue magazine, when the group was supposed to be hammering out its conclusions, has been greeted with much amusement."

And, more background .. the landscape seems to be changing, and Frontpage was apparently trumpeting the possibilities:
http://www.frontpagemag.com/Articles/ReadArticle.asp?ID=24861
"Regarded against this background, reports that Baker regularly consults with President Bush about policy and personnel and meets with his national security adviser, Stephen Hadley, take on an added significance. Its too early to tell whether the Nixon-Kissinger era of détente is newly ascendant in Washington, but with the war in Iraq going poorly and the polls routinely unkind, the temptation to recant the sound principles of the War on Terror and forge a separate peace with terrorists and their state sponsors may seem seductive.
By backing Rumsfeld, President Bush has shown his willingness to defy the prescriptions of the James Baker wing of the Republican Party. Now, as the pressure mounts to accept Bakers sensible advice, one can only hope that the president is as stubborn as his detractors claim."
