President Bush met with Robert Gates, his nominee to replace Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld, before Gates headed to the Senate for his confirmation hearing. View brief webcast of Bush and Gates at WH today. The Senate Armed Services Committee voted unanimously (21-0) to send Gates's nomination to the full Senate; a vote is expected Wednesday.
Bush had lunch with James Baker. The much-leaked Iraqi study group report is scheduled for a full public release tomorrow.
The leader of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, met with VP Cheney. Tony Snow said today, "... as Mr. al Hakim noted, the sectarian violence has been going on [in Iraq] for 82 years [since 1924]."
Those who have followed this Bush family through trial and fatigue, through more than one attempt to steal an election, who have watched President George Herbert Walker Bush preside over an immensely successful family and know his deeply-held emotions and pride in his children, will understand why "Poppy" Bush broke up when speaking to Floridians in Tallahassee about the service of his son, outgoing governor Jeb Bush. Here's a link to the video. Pres. Bush 41 said, "The moral of this story is to serve with honor, and your governor has served with honor."
Click here to see Deck the Halls, and Welcome All, the WH web site with videos and information about decorating the White House for Christmas -- this year and back through 2001. Mrs. Bush said, "Roland, our former pastry chef, came back -- by popular demand -- to build a beautiful gingerbread house that all of you can see right here. If you look closely, you'll see that Barney and Miss Beazley are driving Santa's sleigh at the very top. Kitty is here, right underneath the birdhouse."
Other story of Iraq being shown on FNC with Ollie North now well worth watching
Lovely picture of the day of the Christmas White House, Gretchen. Laura, as always, looks exquisite!..while the president, well, he does fill out a tux! :D
lol! No doubts.
**Bob Gates will be a fine Secretary of Defense**
I really wish I could be sure of that. I hope he's right. I hope he knows something that I don't. But today sure didn't convince me of that statement.
'..watch Brit Hume's interview...with the President..'
DrDeb, I watched the interview and felt SO PROUD of our President. When he talked about being able to 'look in the mirror' when he's living back in Texas and ...liking who he sees because he stuck to his principles.....I said out loud that's why I voted for him. He's an ethical man; he doesn't make decisions on what the current poll dictates.
It was a GREAT interview!
All I can say is, God had blessed us with the great Bush family. Nothing but total class, dignity, selflessnes and grace. I am so grateful for that great American family.
I watched Tony Snow's press briefing today and I can tell you -- Tony got HAMMERED on Gates's "No" -- if Gates had it to do over again, I think he would have reworded his "No" answer. It was a stupid, stupid thing to say and if he'd taken a couple seconds to think, I don't think he would have said it. If he WOULD have said it regardless, he may think differently after another "consultation" with the president on how to present the case to the public.
that's exactly what i mean! His brain had to be stuck in nuetral for him to say that!!! good grief, all he did was give the jackasses talking points for a week!
These people are just plain wonderful! Thank you, Lord!
Do you put an icing/frosting on the chocolate one or just eat it as it is?
Here is my pecan pie
Lovely pics of the decorated WH. And as usual, the gingerbread WH is a masterwork.
It was definitely one of the worst faux pas I've heard in a long time. One reporter asked Tony if Gates's remark would be demoralizing to the troops. (Duh.) Tony was very deft but oh, what a stinkpile. Then again, W made a few verbal gaffes before he learned to deal more effectively with the national media, so I'm hoping Gates will come up to speed really fast on this one.
There are very few wars that ever get one without some setbacks. It's not news. It's not even that disheartening -- if one looks at the larger picture. But that remark did not help anything.
It's not even just that, although that didn't help. I really feel like he doesn't understand anything that's going on. *sighs* He's going to get confirmed anyway so we'll see what happens. I hope I'm wrong.
Coolness, Cubby. They look soooo beautiful, so fine, it makes me proud of the staff that Laura has in place to do such a marvelous job.
Thanks for posting that video link. This family is an honest, decent one and I love them all.
That was the sound-byte they played on British TV which concerned me.
Hi radiohead,
In the WH video, Laura says that the gingerbread WH is all edible, and then stops and says something like, Not that I encourage you to break off any pieces and EAT them!
I've read several books about President Bush's leadership style, and it is he who sets the agenda and makes the calls.
Gates won't do anything that opposes the President's policy in Iraq. I think we can be confident of that.
