Gwyneth Paltrow Denies Slamming America (Freep A Poll)
AOL Entertainment News ^ | December 5, 2006 | Reuters Staff

Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow insisted Monday that contrary to a recent article in a European newspaper, she feels "proud to be American" and would never compare her homeland unfavorably to Britain.

In a statement issued through People magazine's Web site, Paltrow said she was "deeply upset" by remarks attributed to her by the Portuguese newspaper Diario de Noticias, which quoted the actress as saying: "The British are much more intelligent and civilized than the Americans."

"I never, ever would have said that," said Paltrow, 34, who is married to British rock star Chris Martin, the lead singer of Coldplay, and resides part time with him and their two children in London.

"I feel so lucky to be American," she said. "I feel so proud to be American."

Paltrow denies giving an interview to the Portuguese daily, though she did speak at a news conference in Spanish, according to People.

"This is what I said," Paltrow explained. "I said that Europe is a much older culture, and there's a difference. I always say in America, people live to work, and in Europe, people work to live. There are positives in both."

She added: "Obviously, I need to go back to seventh-grade Spanish."

Paltrow, who won an Academy Award in 1999 as best actress for her role in "Shakespeare in Love," was most recently in theaters in the film "Running with Scissors."

I heard a report on radio this morning that she is in fact very fluent in Spanish, and thus her claims of misquotes due to poor her speaking skills in Spanish is nothing but a sham cover story.

"Portuguese newspaper Diario de Noticias, which quoted the actress as saying: "The British are much more intelligent and civilized than the Americans.""

It was my understanding that she said a heck of a lot more than that.

Also - she said pretty much the same thing in February, and in English.

Her "lost in translation" excuse doesn't cut it.

Well, me personally, I'll give her the benefit of the doubt this time. But if it happens again...

Since she hates this country so much she should publicly give up her U.S. Citizenship.

She really is stupid if she doesn't realize that she was giving an interview to the *Portugese* media.

Great--you get it. She will lose and lose big. And she is one homely creature.

Is this old news or something? I thought it was just a few years ago she was said she could no longer live in America because its was too patriotic for her and moved to London.

She even lies about speaking Spanish.....she was on TV here in Guadalajara and her Spanish was terrible - she only said a couple of lines in Spanish and the rest of the interview was in English.

She's smarter than all of us because she's an actress living in Europe and that's the only thing that matters. So what if Spanish and Portuguese are two different languages, we common American peons aren't fit to question her.

Gweneth Paltrow should stay in England. Not only that, but she should revoke her US citizenship, as well. That would be good for her and for us.

OK....lets assume she did not say this. The trouble is so much of Hollywood thinks this way so we assume she really does feel this way.....and I happen to believe that she is another anti American liberal.

What are yous guys talking about?
She just put my faith back in her by stating
she loves America. Unless she's lying and you
people can find other statements of her denouncing
the USA, I suggest you all stop being such prix
about a women who states she was misquoted, backed up
with a statement which shows the opposite of the
reported anti- American one she supposed made.
