Southern Sweden sees record mild December

STOCLKHOLM (AFP) - While much of Sweden is usually gripped by freezing temperatures and heavy snow in December, the south of the country was enjoying its mildest start to the month since 1953, meteorologists told Swedish radio.

"We have daily average temperatures of between six and nine degrees (Celsius) in many places in the south of the country. That's five to eight degrees or more over the norm," Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) meteorologist, Lars Knutsson, told Sweden's national radio Sveriges Radio.

Stockholm reported on Friday temperatures of 11.1 degrees Celsius (52 degrees Fahrenheit), the capital city's highest readings since the 12.2 degrees recorded in 1953.

Meanwhile, Sweden's second city, Gothenburg, situated on the south west coast of the country, reported its warmest December temperature (11.0 degrees) since records began in 1859.

"The weather reminds me of early autumn rather than winter," Knutsson said.

The mild weather was expected to continue into December.

Snow that had fallen in central areas of the Scandinavian country such as Dalarna, Gaevleborg and Medelpad had partly melted, Knutsson said.

Sweden's three main cities -- Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmoe, all located in the south of the country -- also enjoyed record mild average temperatures in September, October and November, according to SMHI.

1953, hmmm 1953, wasn't that 5 years after Al Gore was born. Didn't he have his first serious case of ozone depleting, methane inducing gas and belching attacks that year.

Now why wasn't there a winter like this in 1941 with German troops right outside Moscow...?

Alps experiencing warmest period in 1,300 years, climatologist says

http://www.breitbart.com/news/na/cp_g120502A.xml.html

VERONIKA OLEKSYN VIENNA, Austria (AP) - Europe's alpine region is going through its warmest period in a millennium, the head of an extensive climate study said Tuesday.

"We are currently experiencing the warmest period in the Alpine region in 1,300 years," said Reinhard Boehm, a climatologist at Austria's Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics.

Boehm based his comments on the results of a project conducted by a group of European institutes between March 2003 and August 2006. Their aim was to reconstruct the climate in the region encompassing the Rhone Valley in France to the west, Budapest, Hungary, to the east, Tuscany, Italy, to the south and Nuremberg, Germany, to the north over the last 1,000 years.

Boehm said the current warm period in the alpine region began in the noting that a similar warming occurred in the 10th and 12th centuries. However, the temperatures during those phases were "slightly under the temperatures we've experienced over the past 20 years."

Humans first had an impact on the global climate in the 1950s, Boehm said, noting that at first, the release of aerosols into the atmosphere cooled the climate. Since the 1980s, however, greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane have warmed it, he said.

"It will undoubtedly get warmer in the future," Boehm said.

Sponsored by the European Union, the project sought to homogenize climate data collected in the Alpine region over the last 250 years. Climate reconstruction focused on seven parameters, including temperature, sunshine periods and cloud cover. Tree rings and ice core measurements were also taken into consideration.

The unseasonably warm weather this fall has caused concern in Austria's ski resorts, where slopes are still largely covered in green grass instead of snow. Many have had to postpone the start of their skiing season and some have tried attracting tourists with alternative programs, such as hiking.

Austrian ski resorts usually open at the end of November.

In some cases, organizers have had to be creative to make sure their events take place as planned.

In Hochfilzen, Tyrol, organizers of an upcoming international race went to the Grossglockner - Austria's highest mountain - to get snow they needed to prepare their track.

It took about five days to truck between 7,000 and 8,000 cubic metres of snow to the Grossglockner, said organizer Thomas Abfalter.

There is no need to post such stories. Someone else will simply post one about a record cold day in some town in Wisconsin and deny that there is even such a thing as global warming.

I was damn surprised Sweden had a south.

Start driving in central Sweden...

Cue Beatles' "She Loves You" in car CD player

Song finishes -- "Oh, we're in southern Sweden already?"

The temps here are pretty much on par for this time of year. Neither southern Sweden, nor southern Wisconsin would be proof in either direction when considering the global climate.

The WARMEST December on record!!!!!!!!! Run for the hills!!!!

What happens to the "warmest December" when the temps drop for the duration in the next day or 2? Think we'll hear a "never mind" from these "meteorologists"?

Based on 5 days of above average temps in one location, we can conclude that

1) the entire Earth is getting warmer

2) Sacrificing the entire economy of the US is the only way to fix it

3) It's most likely George Bush's fault.

I've never been to Sweden, but I'm sure it has some beautiful scenery (and not just the women). I love to drive. And I especially love to drive through beautiful scenery. Why would I ruin a good drive listening to the Beatles? Why would I even make a bad drive worse, listening to the Beatles?

Unless of course when you said "Cue Beatles' "She Loves You" in car CD player" , you meant with the volume off, then that is understandible.

Otherwise your just cruel and inhuman.

For all the different vile things that Saddam and his sons did, I don't think they ever forced anyone to listen to the Beatles.

I love predictions like this. Now, if it was Dec. 30th and they made a statement to that effect, I *might* listen.
