Somali Islamists urge Muslim fighters to join jihad

A Somali Islamist defense chief appealed to foreign Muslim fighters for the first time on Saturday to join his movement's "holy war" against Ethiopia.

Ethiopian tanks move into battle with Somalia Islamists-(update)

BAIDOA, Somalia (AFP) - Ethiopia moved tanks and other reinforcements into the battle zone for a third day of fighting against Islamist forces in southern Somalia, witnesses said, while the Islamists vowed an all-out war.
As the clashes intensified on twin fronts, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said that fighting had left "dozens" dead and left many homeless.
But the government said its Ethiopian-backed forces had killed more than 500 Islamist fighters ince Wednesday when violence erupted near the government-held town of Baidoa.
"We are very concerned about the plight of civilians who might get caught up in the fighting," said Pascal Hundt, the ICRC's chief for Somalia.
"We call on all parties involved in the clashes to spare and protect civilians and to take every precaution when conducting military operations," he said in a statement.
The ICRC urged rival sides "to ensure that wounded and captured fighters are protected and receive treatment and that medical staff, hospitals and clinics are spared from attacks Hospitals and clinics in the region had admitted at least 200 wounded since Wednesday, the ICRC said.
Somali Information Minister Ali Jama said fatalities were reported on two fronts east and south of the Baidoa, about 250 kilometres (155 miles) northwest of the capital Mogadishu.
"The combined total from two fronts is over 500 Islamists killed since Wednesday," Jama told AFP.
The figure could not be independently verified.
"Most of those killed are innocent children who have been sent to the frontline. It is unfortunate because we have been forced into this ... we do not like shedding the blood of children," Jama added.
Fighting erupted early Wednesday, hours after the expiry of an Islamist-imposed ultimatum for thousands of Ethiopian troops the Islamists say have been deployed to back the government.
"Our Mujahideen are ready to defend themselves from the invading enemies," Islamic commander Hassan Bullow told AFP.
"This war is a religious obligation and we are here to fight for our religion against the enemies until we die."
Ethiopia is supporting Somalia's weakened government against the Islamist forces, which control the capital Mogadishu and much of the rest of the war-ravaged Horn of Africa nation.
The two sides traded heavy shellfire on Friday east and south of Baidoa, the government said.
"The fighting is continuing heavily on both fronts," Jama told AFP.
"Much fighting is taking place, mainly in Idale and Dinsoor," he added, referring to outposts about 60 kilometres (40 miles) and 120 kilometres south of Baidoa.
In central Somalia, residents said Ethiopian military trucks headed to Sadehigle, outside the Muslim-held town of Bandiradley, about 630 kilometers (400 miles) north of Mogadishu, sparking fears of possible clashes.
Witnesses said Ethiopian tanks traveled overnight to Daynunay, a flashpoint garrison town about 30 kilometres to the east of Baidoa, where shelling was reported.
Clashes erupted on Wednesday, a day after the expiry of a deadline issued by the Islamists for Ethiopian troops to pull out.
The Islamists have complained about the silence of the Arab League and African Union over the dispute.
"Why are they ignoring what is taking place in the ground?" asked Sheikh Mohamoud Ibrahim Sulley, a leading Islamist official.
"The world is silent today while Ethiopian forces are killing us inside our country, but tomorrow when we defeat them and chase them things will be changed, we will inter their territories and at that moment the world will shout," Sulley warned.
The fighting and war of words have come despite a statement by European Commission humanitarian chief Louis Michel on Wednesday that he had secured the commitment of both sides to observe a truce and resume peace talks.
Arab League-mediated talks in Khartoum collapsed in November when Islamists refused to negotiate until Ethiopia withdraws its troops.

Eight Zhejiang House Church Christians Sentenced; Prominent Beijing Christian Lawyer Gao Zhisheng Receives Court Verdict

MIDLAND, TEXAS (ANS) -- After an almost 12-hour marathon pre-Christmas trial on December 22, 2006 (Beijing Time), eight House Church Christians in Zhejiang were quickly sentenced to time in prison by the People's Court of Xiaoshan District, Hangzhou city.
China Aid Association (CAA) reports the trial started at 8:30am and ended at 9pm. The verdict, sentences of between one year and three and a half years, "were clearly prepared by the government in advance before the actual trial started."
CAA says that during the trial, the 75-year-old Elder Shen Chengyi fell on the ground in the court and lost consciousness. He was sent to the hospital for emergency treatment.
Pastor Shen Zhuke (Elder Shen's daughter) received a sentence of and half years; pastor Wang Weiliang, three years; brother Feng Guangliang, two years and brother Luo Bingliang, one year. The other four, including elder Shen Chengyi, brother Ni Weimin, brother Shen Jianjian, brother Guo Lijun were sentenced to imprisonment from 1 to 3 years but the sentence was postponed. They are likely to be released.
Meanwhile, in another prominent case, the Beijing Intermediate Court sentenced the well-known Christian human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng for three years but the sentence was postponed for 5 years. Gao was arrested on August 18 this year for his human rights advocacy work.
"Though today's sentence against the faithful is less heavy than expected because of the international pressure, yet it is not acceptable," said CAA's Bob Fu. "The international community should urge the Chinese government to release those innocent House Church believers immediately."

An American-owned ship was pursued by suspected pirates on December 19 in the Indian Ocean. The ship was 120 miles off the coast of Somalia when another vessel approached them, claiming to be in distress. The distress message came at approximately 5:30 PM, from a distance of 5 miles off the starboard bow. The crew began tracking the signal of the allegedly distressed vessel, but did not change course.
The American ship caught sight of the other vessel within five minutes. Due to the frequency of pirate attacks in the waters of Somalia, the vessel's relative high speed and interceptive course, the distress claims of the vessel became suspect. From the American ship, the vessel looked to be in sound condition; there appeared to be a group of men on deck. These factors caused the American ship's captain to put the bridge watch on notice and order the house to be locked down. The course was altered as well; the American ship headed farther out to sea, as the suspect vessel was small and pirate vessels often are unable to pursue after reaching a certain distance from their home port, due to fuel concerns.
By 6:00 PM, the American ship began to pull away from the suspect vessel, and within 15 minutes there was a distance between them of approximately two miles. The suspect vessel appeared to have slowed, but continued in pursuit of the American ship. The American ship again headed further away from the Somali shoreline, heading east at maximum speed. The suspect vessel then faded from sight. Throughout the entire period, the suspect vessel had been calling for the American ship to stop and come to their position. According to the Americans, the radio calls sounded as though they were using more than one radio, and that there was more than one caller.
This incident is significant because it marks only the second time in over six months that a western ship has reported suspecting itself as the target of pirates off the coast of Somalia. Through approximately May 2006, the Somali waters were generally considered the second-worst in the world for piracy, after Indonesia's Malacca Straits. The U.S.Government has issued successive warnings for ships plying the Indian Ocean, with the most recent warning recommending vessels stay 200 nautical miles from the coast. However, the Islamic Courts Union announced in late spring that piracy would not be tolerated, as it was un-Islamic and punishable under Shari'a Law. Since that time, suspected acts of reported piracy appear to have diminished in frequency.

U.S. Consulate Hermosillo issued the following Warden Message on December 22:
This Warden Message is being sent to alert U.S. citizens of recent violence in Hermosillo, Mexico and to advise U.S. citizens traveling in the region to be mindful of their personal safety and surroundings at all times.
On Wednesday afternoon, December 20, two individuals were assassinated in Hermosillo, Sonora while in their vehicle at the corner of a main boulevard close to the U.S. Consulate. According to local law enforcement authorities, the perpetrators fired 30 rounds from an assault rifle.
Although no U.S. citizens were targeted in this gang-style execution, the incident took place during daylight hours near several restaurants and businesses frequented by U.S. citizens. The Consulate reminds all U.S. citizens living in or visiting Mexico to be alert and aware of their surroundings. Violence can occur in public areas including restaurants, shopping centers and public areas of congregation.
We reiterate the following points made in the September 14, 2006 public announcement concerning the rising level of violence in areas of Mexico. U.S. citizens residing and traveling in Mexico should exercise extreme caution when in unfamiliar areas and be aware of their surroundings at all times. Though there is no evidence that U.S. citizens are targeted, criminals look for every opportunity to take advantage of unwary travelers. If you feel you are being followed, you should notify law enforcement officials as soon as possible. U.S. citizens should make every attempt to travel on main roads during daylight hours, particularly the toll ("cuota") roads, which are generally more secure. It is preferable for U.S. citizens to stay in well-known tourist destinations and tourist areas of the cities with more adequate security, and provide an itinerary to a friend or family member not traveling with you. U.S. citizens should refrain from displaying expensive-looking jewelry, large amounts of money, or other valuable items.

This Warden Message is being issued to alert U.S. citizens traveling to and residing in Bolivia to the ongoing volatility of the political and social situation in Bolivia. As we head into the holiday season the Embassy has no specific information regarding planned strikes or protests; however protests, strikes, and other civic actions can occur at any time and disrupt transportation on a local and national level. The police have used tear gas to break up protests in the past. In addition to rallies and street demonstrations, protesters sometimes block roads; they sometimes react with force when travelers attempt to pass through or go around roadblocks and occasionally have used the threat of explosives to press their point.
In addition the Consular section would like to remind/inform U.S citizens living or traveling in Bolivia that it is common practice during times of celebration to use dynamite in lieu of fireworks. Travelers, especially in rural areas, are advised to be aware and to avoid if possible areas where such celebrations may occur. Additionally all travelers and residents should be alert to the possibility that thieves may be targeting foreign travelers during this season of increased travel.
We wish to remind U.S. citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence as has happened in the past. U.S. citizens are therefore urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations if possible, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations. Since the timing and routes of marches and demonstrations are always subject to change, U.S. citizens should monitor local media sources for new developments.

This Travel Warning is being issued to alert American citizens to the ongoing demonstrations and political tensions in Lebanon. The Department strongly urges U.S. citizens to defer travel to Lebanon and also urges American citizens in Lebanon to consider carefully the risks of remaining. This Travel Warning also alerts U.S. citizens to the ongoing safety and security concerns in Lebanon. It supersedes the Travel Warning issued on September 28, 2006.
The Department remains concerned about the personal safety and security of American citizens in Lebanon. American citizens traveling to or residing in Lebanon despite this Travel Warning should exercise heightened caution. Since the August 14 cessation of hostilities between Israel and Lebanon, political tensions in Lebanon have increased and have become a cause for concern in recent weeks. Hizballah maintains a strong presence in many areas of Lebanon, and there is the potential for anti-American actions by other extremist groups in Tripoli, Sidon, and the Palestinian refugee camps. Americans are urged to avoid large public gatherings, including the Martyrs Square and Riad El Solh areas in Beirut when demonstrations occur. Conditions in Lebanon can change quickly and dramatically, including with regard to access to Beirut International Airport and the ports. Sporadic violence has occurred and there remains the possibility of further violence. All U.S. citizens in Lebanon are encouraged to register with the U.S. Embassy in Beirut where they may also obtain updated information on travel and security conditions in Lebanon. Registration details are discussed below.
U.S. citizens in Lebanon should at all times be aware of a possible deterioration of the security situation. Americans should pay close attention to their personal security and consider fully the necessity of remaining in Lebanon at this time. Accordingly, Americans and their family members should ensure that their passports and U.S. travel documents are up-to-date. The lack of valid travel documents will delay the ability of the U.S. Embassy to provide assistance.
The U.S. Government considers the potential threat to U.S. Government personnel assigned to Beirut sufficiently serious to require them to live and work under strict security restrictions. These practices limit, and may occasionally prevent, the movement of U.S. Embassy officials in certain areas of the country. Unofficial travel to Lebanon by U.S. Government employees and their family members requires prior approval by the Department of State.
Dangers posed by landmines and unexploded ordnance throughout southern Lebanon are significant and also exist in other areas where civil war fighting was intense. There is a danger of unexploded cluster bombs and other ordnance in areas south of the Litani River that were scenes of fighting in the July-August 2006 conflict. Over 100 civilians have been injured, and more than a dozen killed, by unexploded ordnance, since the cessation of hostilities. Travelers should be aware of posted landmine warnings and strictly avoid all areas where landmines and unexploded ordnance may be present.

I agree with her, but this will be nearly impossible with a Dem Congress and Senate. IMO, the Republicans should have done this when they had control.

A man was in jail Friday after police seized explosives from his mobile home. The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Bomb Squad was sent to Skidaway Mobile Estates at 9902 Ferguson Ave. around 6 p.m. Thursday following a report of explosives.
Officers searched the mobile home at Lot 116 and said they found several suspicious items stored inside a homemade gun cabinet in a bedroom, police spokesman Sgt. Mike Wilson said. Officers seized several canisters containing explosive-making materials, including German military grenades, igniters, fuses and consumer fireworks, Wilson said.

Report: Government analysis shows NYC commuter rail tunnels vulnerable to small bomb attack

NEW YORK (AP) -- The explosion from a small bomb could flood commuter train tunnels between New York and New Jersey in a matter of hours, according to a new government analysis that suggests the PATH rail system is more vulnerable than initially thought, a newspaper reported Friday.

Police are trying to trace a gang of British Muslims who are thought to have returned to plot terror attacks in Britain after being trained abroad for more than a year by al-Qaeda, Nine Britons, all said to be in their twenties, were among a group of 12 Western recruits groomed by al-Qaeda at a secret camp near the Afghan border to set up new terror cells in London and other Western capitals.
Police do not know the real identities of this gang, who are known as the “English brothers” because of their shared language. As well as nine Britons, they include two Norwegians and an Australian who were smuggled into the Waziristan tribal region in Pakistan in October 2005.
They are believed to have been under the command of an al-Qaeda veteran suspected of training some of the Britons accused of the alleged plot to blow up passenger planes flying to the US from Heathrow airport in the summer.
The intensive manhunt for the “English brothers” was revealed to The Times as the alleged British mastermind of the Heathrow plot spoke for the first time as he appeared yesterday in a court in Pakistan on separate charges. Outside court, he vehemently denied any role in plans to bomb up to ten transatlantic flights.
