The Nation's Pulse: Bad Girls Go Out
American Spectator Magazine ^ | Published 11/30/2006 12:07:10 AM | Carol Platt Liebau

Perhaps youthful celebrities like Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan are more to be pitied than blamed. Certainly, one branch of their education has been sadly neglected: No one has ever taught them how young ladies climb out of vehicles -- knees together, both legs lifted simultaneously, torso swiveled, feet placed firmly on the pavement.

In recent days, this oversight has evolved into something of a public spectacle. Websites devoted to celebrity gossip have featured plenty of pictures of Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan climbing out of cars.

The problem is this: Young women like Lohan and Spears are, in fact, serving as role models to girls all over the United States. A poll conducted last year by Teenage Research Unlimited found that Lindsay Lohan was the person most envied by teen girl respondents.

What's most remarkable is the deafening silence from the larger culture that has greeted the antics of the young starlets.

It's hardly admirable that adult males say nothing about the exhibitionism, but perhaps it's understandable; while they may not respect young women like Lohan and Spears, the visuals are doubtless intriguing. But older women who fail to speak out about why Spears' and Lohan's behavior is inappropriate and wrong become complicit in it on a much deeper level.

By their silence, they are allowing little girls (like they once were) to absorb the destructive message that vulgarity is the same as sexiness, that exhibiting oneself to be stared at or drooled over like a prime cut of meat constitutes "empowerment," and that it's "cool" to flaunt one's sexuality indiscriminately, rather than sharing it with a man who's shown he's interested in more than just another female body.

Not pedophilia.

Just looks like some old trapper skinned that critter and threw it back in the swamp. It has fresh knife marks and all.

Her sister seems to be a pretty nice girl. Somehow when Justin Timberlake dumped Britney she went off the rails and has never recovered, but instead has become much worse.

Older women understand that pretty young women need to use themselves a little, and that it won't last forever.

Ahhhh contrare... us older women know that she is making a fool out of herself and this is no way to be giving an in your face to K-Fed (or more likely Justin) and at this rate she is going to burn out and lose her children. She is showing an extreme lack of class and judgement. A woman, young or old, who does not respect herself can never expect respect from anyone else.

It served two purposes:it gave me the best view, and it blocked anyone else's!

How chivarous of you. My husband watches my back, too. He looks around and makes sure he blocks the view of those who have no business sneaking a peak.

"I'm actually surprised she would flash the world with a Playboy crotch shot."

More along the lines of Hustler than Playboy. And I'm not surprised at all.

It's Bush's fault.

I've seen the pics. It can't be Bush's fault because there is....

Just trust me on this. Bush is not at fault.

Believe me, she gets plenty of attention. But she's 9 going on 19. The other two are 15 and 10.

"Britney Spears is now going in public with no underwear"

Are you sure there is supposed to be an "l" in that sentence?

"Is that what we do here on FR? Do we mind our business when somebody does something we don't like?"

I referred to the author's whining in American Spectator, not to FR's function or motives. The discussion has merit of course.

But yes, so long as one's freedom doesn't interfere with another's freedom or security, we do in fact mind our own business like the good people we are.

That seems quasi pedophilic to me.

It is, and practically every man and woman who ever layed down together have made such bantering allusions to each other.

In other news: the Pope is catholic, and fire is very hot.

Taking that argument, you should probably mind your own business then when the author exercises her right to free speech.

As it is, you are criticizing her for criticizing someone else.

I am only arguing about this because I think its about time people start calling these girls out for their behavior, and when people like you take greater offense at the author then at the actions of these girls, it gives people like Paris and Britney a "victim status" that they don't deserve.

You could be right about drugs. Wasn't Britney working for Mickey Mouse when she was a child? It's bizarre to see someone grow up so cute and then adopt the hooker look.

Not to get too graphic, but what is with the trend for these young girls and shaving ALL their body hair?

Taking that argument, you should probably mind your own business then when the author exercises her right to free speech.

I generally would. The reason I turned defensive was for the insipid accusation that (as a male) I am silent because I "may not respect young women like Lohan and Spears". This absurdity is doubled by the suggestion that I should strongly condemn them in order to remedy... remedy something.

To get straight to it- this is what I think of Britney: I don't.

It is amazing how people worship celebrities with their cash and attention, but then cry over their poor character. If Britney is a role model to anyone, then the outrage should be at the leeches who follow her. That goes for actors, singers, sports stars... society makes them rich, and then complains about their behavior.

Worse, they complain that I (someone who gave her zero $$) am not particularly bothered by her antics.

Hypothetically, if I new Britney personally, then I might be really annoyed with her. Perhaps I would not give her the time of day.

Or I might want to marry her.

The very last thing I would do is publish an essay attacking not only her, but the people who smugly ignore her. (Me!)
