Oregon State Lieutenant Gregg Hastings has confirmed that searchers found a pair of pants they believe James Kim left as a marker at the bottom of a ravine, where he is believed to have traveled on foot. Unconfirmed reports from local news stations say rescuers may also have found another of his personal items near the pants.
Rescue teams are currently searching for James in a 5-mile stretch of a narrow canyon a few miles from where the car was found, Josephine County Undersheriff Brian Anderson said at a press conference Tuesday, adding that "it is a very rugged, remote area; the teams are having some difficulty because of the terrain and conditions."

They should have packed a hunting rifle and some ammo....(kinda being sarcastic)
News update ......
They have reported that James had left his clothes in a Pattern as to give clues....
The helicopter is dropping survival kits in the area for James....

I hope he's found alive. Seems there are better ways to leave clues than stripping in such conditions.
I read on another thread that they now believe he must have packed a few extra items of clothing in the backpack he took. Maybe those pants got too wet and cold, so he changed them out for some others. Smart thing to do to stave off hypothermia!
I sure hope the care packages ALL have notes telling him that his wife and kids are OK! That alone would give him the strength to make it through this.
When we first visited here in '85, we went thru towns in Eastern Oregon that did not have electricity or telephones. It's still pretty much open range ranching over there, a million miles from Portland. It's the farthest one can be from an interstate in the contiguous 48, and we have three counties that individually are larger than New England.
I know people who have lived their entire lives here that would never go hunting without their GPS, it's that easy to get lost - happens several times a year.

Ok, I've been living under a rock. This is the first I'm hearing of this story. But here's the weird part. I just bought a gift for my wife yesterday after after seeing a review on CNET. After reading this thread and seeing a picture of him, I went back and checked. Sure enough, the review was by Jim Kim. Yikes!

It is now a recovery operation. They have found his body and he is dead. What a shame. Tough holiday season for this family.
All the pictures show such a loving family. I just feel so sad for all of them.

Now come the lawsuits against Rand-McNally, the website providing another map, the woman who warned them off that road, etc. :-(
One has to marvel at how the pioneers handled misadventure.
Post-liability insurance and post-litigation lawyers, we are much poorer, character-wise.
