American Legion to Congressman Rangel: Apologize Now

WASHINGTON, Nov. 27 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The National Commander of The American Legion called on Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) to apologize for suggesting that American troops would not choose to fight in Iraq if they had other employment options.

"Our military is the most skilled, best-trained all-volunteer force on the planet," said National Commander Paul A. Morin. "Like that recently espoused by Sen. John Kerry, Congressman Rangel's view of our troops couldn't be further from the truth and is possibly skewed by his political opposition to the war in Iraq."

According to Rangel, "If a young fellow has an option of having a decent career, or joining the Army to fight in Iraq, you can bet your life that he would not be in Iraq. If there's anyone who believes these youngsters want to fight, as the Pentagon and some generals have said, you can just forget about it. No bright young individual wants to fight just because of a bonus and just because of some educational benefits," Rangel said.

Rangel was responding to a question during an interview yesterday on Fox News Sunday about a recent study by the Heritage Foundation which found that those enlisting in the military tend to be better educated than the general public and that military recruiting seems to be more successful in middle-class and wealthy neighborhoods than in poor ones.

According to the study, 97 percent of military enlistees were high school graduates versus 80 percent of Americans in general.

This isn't exactly a news article. It's a press release. The Legion paid them to circulate this to newspapers, hoping that some will pick it up and print it.

That doesn't change that Rangel does need to be exposed and the piece is well-written.

I think Rangel will refuse to apologize. He had to apologize to MS lately and won't want to eat crow again so soon.

Rangel: "It was just a bad joke. Can't we just move on..."

"Yeah, didn't you recognize that I was talking about President Bush?"

Those 'less than bright' military personnel will be coming home, Charlie, and they're going to have some things to tell you and your ilk.

Maybe Charlie is actually trying to overturn the Selective Service Act (1956) by showing that the country doesn't want the draft. It would help the rats undermine this country even faster than they are doing it now.

Things like this really get me angry.

As a Youth Leader at my church, I have had the privilege of teaching two young men who have already served over there, another that had just entered the army, another who is enlisting after graduation.

I also have a nephew serving there (2 tours) and a brother-in-law over there in his second year a a civilian contractor.

It is a wonderful thing to behold when i look into the eyes of these young men who are JOINING WILLINGLY and hear them declare their love for this country and the freedoms THAT GOD GAVE US.

Mr. Rangel, sit down and shut up.

"The bigg question is how much does he pay for that hair straightner????"

Rangel's hair is likely naturally straight. Not all blacks have to straighten their hair.

Right on target. These guys will lose an election in their district the day the OJ criminal jury admits they knew he was guilty but let him go anyway.

Maybe someone should start a website to document the thousands of soldiers who CHOOSE to serve, and yes CHOOSE TO FIGHT.

I would like to honor my nephew as one such soldier.

He was honorably discharged in May 2006 after serving in the Army for four years, and 18 months in Iraq.

In May 2002, he GRADUATED from Indiana University, and had made the decision before graduating that he was joining the Army. Why? Because he was moved by 9/11, and wanted to fight terrorism, which he saw as a great threat. We all knew at that time that we were going to go to war, and so did he. Charlie, my nephew chose to fight. And I corresponded with him during his tour in Iraq, and was PROUD of the good work he and his comrades did, even though it was not reported.

Rather than denigrating these troops, we should be honoring them as the next WWII generation, full of courage and self-sacrifice in the face of great danger. They are remarkable.

Problem is, some of these organizations get hit up for military services at funerals at rate of 2 or 3 for every day of the year. I rememeber the tough time we had getting a service when my grandfather passed.

I grew up in Louisiana, and saw a corrupt RAT get reelected 4 times as Governor, only to finally see justice way after he took what he needed. He was not reprimanded by the voters of the state, but rather by the justice system.

Yes. The MSM doesn't want the public to know about any stats which might put Iraq into perspective.

Fat chance. Being a liberal means never having to say you're sorry.

I will probably take a beating for saying this, but I believe the Congressman has a right to believe whatever he wants, right or wrong. I would fight for his right to be wrong.

That is a given..and I am just as free to criticize him for saying it and believing it.

The lowest-ranking, newest, youngest recruit in our armed forces ranks higher with me and has more of my respect than Chas. Rangel ever will.

Rangel is the typical low-life liberal who blames America first for everything and anything negative in the universe.
I personally will blame any fool who voted for this creep on any attacks to our beloved military that may result from Rangel's rants and bald-faced lies.

Was Rangel drafted into the service? Maybe he's bitter at the experience.

According to NNDB, Rangel served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1948 to 1952, not exactly great years for racial equality, which may have influenced his view. Supposedly, he rescued forty comrades from behind enemy lines, earning the Bronze Star, and also received a Purple Heart.
