Immigrant Entrepreneurs - New evidence that newcomers create jobs and wealth
The Wall Street Journal ^ | November 26, 2006

Everyone knows that Intel, Yahoo, Google, eBay and Sun Microsystems are wildly successful U.S. technology companies. Less well known is that immigrant entrepreneurs played a role in founding each one--and a whole lot of others.

After an election season that featured an unfortunate amount of anti-immigration posturing, a new study from the National Venture Capital Association is a welcome reminder that foreign workers make their fair share of important contributions to our economy.

Titled "American Made: The Impact of Immigrant Entrepreneurs and Professionals on U.S. Competitiveness," the report found that "Over the past 15 years, immigrants have started 25 percent of U.S. public companies that were venture-backed." These businesses employ some 220,000 people in the U.S. and have a current market capitalization that "exceeds $500 billion, adding significant value to the American economy."

The authors surveyed smaller, private venture-backed companies as well and discovered that nearly half of the founders also were immigrants. Protectionists insist that immigrants "steal" jobs from native workers, but this survey found evidence that these newcomers are more likely to expand the job pool. "Almost two-thirds (66 percent) of the immigrant founders of privately held venture-backed companies have started or intend to start more companies in the United States," according to the report.

Despite these contributions, and the potential for more, U.S. policies today have made it increasingly difficult for foreigners to come here and start businesses. H-1b visas, which go to skilled workers, are capped and tend to reflect not market demand but the political mood of Congress. And of late, lawmakers have been content to raise immigration fears instead of adjusting U.S. policy to fix the problem.

Anti-illegal alien is not the same as anti-immigrant.

I don't think that anyone has suggested that immigration is not important to our country.

I would like to know how many businesses have been started by illegal immigrants. Other than selling drugs, I would suspect few...

Hurray for newcomers! Welcome! Welcome!

Now, please show us your paperwork, just like the paperwork the immigrants who I sponsored had to have. Thank you!

RE: unfortunate amount of anti-immigration

And.. as for these employees of the WSJ, they won't even extend the courtesy to us to acknowledge that our complaint is against ILLEGAL immigration. Those employees of the WSJ can pound salt.

As usual, the open borders moonbats are confusing legal and illegal immigration.

Cherry picking a few success stories instead of the masses who go directly onto welfare and are destroying our social services and depressing the job market.....

Is this what the author meant by the story:

Less well known is that illeal-immigrant entrepreneurs played a role in founding each one--and a whole lot of others.

If not, then SHUT UP! I'm getting sick and tired of these A**holes trying to blur the line between illegals and Green Card holders. My wife has a Green Card, and gets upset whenever she hears about the possibility of Amnesty for the Illegals.

If you suspect Pedro is an illegal alien, and if you haven't done so already, Pedro should be reported at

www.wehirealiens.com

They will report your information to the FBI and ICE.

Let's look at the reality of what is going on in Congress.

Since this article points to high-tech workers, let's look at the H1B Technical and Professional Temporary Visa, since that is probably the best method of legally bringing both tech workers and bi-lingual teachers into the country.

While the H1B is temporary, a participant can be converted to permanent status(Green Card) by employer sponsorship.

During the boom, the H1B quota reached 195,000, and during the bust it was lowered to 50,000.

As the econmy recovered there were attempts to raise the quota to 115,000 by the Senate, but they were blocked by Republican hardliners in the House. Eventually, the quota increase was rolled into the Senate Reform Bill passed last spring, which is where it still sits.

One thing should be clear. Inadequate/unrealistic immigration policies lead to illegal immigration. The H1B, in the past, has been used as an example of immigration policy that worked well.

So now we are in a situation where the House Republicans are trying to undermine the H1B. In fact, Tancredo's bill, that was introduced in July 05, would have eliminated the H1B.

When and where, legal means are blocked, illegals rush in. A good example is that Dallas ISD, earlier this year, briefly explored the possibility of hiring qualified illegals as bilingual teachers.

( Mild sarcasm alert)

Right!!!

Here is how it works:

10 Grams of cocaine, $800.00

Distribution level 1: Add 35% caffiene: 13.5 Grams now. Sell as 8-balls for $300 each. Value=$1,200.00

Level 2: Dilute 8-balls 35% with mannose. Sell as Grams @ $100. Value= $1,822.50.

Level 3: Dilute grams with lidocaine 25%. Sell half-grams. Value=$2,278.13

Level 4: Dilute with 25% sorbitol. Sell quarters. Value=$2,847.66

I heard of another one that recently hired five bilingual teachers and they came from Mexico. They would be legal hires but still hired from outside the country.

Well it didn't work out so well for me and thousands of unemployed/underemployed American engineers.

As usual you criticize Republicans and conservatives and expect us to agree with democrats.
Why are you here?
