(CBS 5) MARTINEZ -- Four-time convicted sex offender Cary Verse was being held in the Contra Costa County jail in Martinez Monday after being stopped over the weekend with an underage boy in his car, authorities told CBS 5.
The 36-year old Verse served six years in prison and another six years in Atascadero State Hospital, where he got therapy. He was convicted of raping three teen-aged boys and a homeless man from 1988 to 1992.
Authorities told CBS 5 that a tail light on his car was out, prompting Walnut Creek police to make the 2 p.m. Saturday traffic stop during which a 14-year old boy was found in the car with Verse.
Having a juvenile with him reportedly violates the rules of Verse's conditional release from the state hospital. He was one of the first rehabilitated 'sexually violent predators' in California given a conditional release under a controversial state law.
Walnut Creek Police Lt. Tim Schultz said Verse "was taken into custody. We were directed by the corporation that oversees his supervision that they did not feel comfortable with him being released and they requested that we take him into custody."
But the father of the child who was in the car with Verse told CBS 5 he had asked Verse to give his son a ride to a local shopping mall.
The father, who is not being named so as to protect the identity of his son, knew of Verse's background. He is convinced the boy was safe, is safe, and that nothing inappropriate happened.
Upon his release in Feb. 2004, Verse was driven from four homes in the Bay Area. Attorney Anthony Ashe ultimately offered Verse the small cottage behind his gated Bay Point law office in Contra Costa County in Feb. 2005. That's where Verse's lived ever since.
Under the law authorizing his release, Verse wears a satellite tracking device on his hip, parole officers are said to make frequent unannounced visits to check on him and Verse is suppose to map out his schedules and submit written requests to leave his home for even mundane trips.
There was no immediate word from the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office about how long Verse might spend in jail or what the impact might be on his conditional release.
"So, Cary, let me get this straight -- you've served fully one-third of your life in prison? You got 12 years? For raping teen-age boys? Bummer, man. Say, can you do me a favor? My 14-year-old son needs to get to the mall, can you give him a lift? Thanks, man!"
Lucky for the kid, this was a trial run for Verse. If he got away with it, he takes the next step.
"The unspeakable vice of the ancient Greeks."
L
Actually I assumed he was white.
He raped four people and was in jail for six years and in a mental hospital for six years. That's three years per rape. The father of the boy found with the rapist needs some serious help, even the State of California doesn't approve of that!
Caught me by surprise when I did a search!
"He was one of the first rehabilitated 'sexually violent predators' in California given a conditional release under a controversial state law."
Rehabilitated. Uh huh. Perhaps by the standards pertaining to West Hollywood, or the People's Republic of San Francisco.
California has become just too surreal.
WTH? The corporation?
Rape of male children does seem to be more of a white man's crime like serial killings and canibalism. Obviously there are exceptions.
Plus Walnut Creek is not local to Bay Point for going to the mall.
Hate to ruin a good rant, but the fact is that most sex offenders do not repeat after conviction.
Only about 3-6% of convicted sex offenders re-offend within three years. ( study )Other criminals have a higher recidivism rate than sex offenders."Across all studies, the average sex offense recidivism rate (as evidenced by rearrest or reconviction) was 18.9 percent for rapists and 12.7 percent for child molesters over a four to five year period." ( study )
Treatment helps significantly: "Those who were in treatment longer tended to last longer in the community without a re-offense. " ( study )
Please understand, I'm not defending the horrible crimes of sex offenders in the least. They deserve severe punishment for their crimes. But treatment does help, and for most of them, prison is enough punishment to make them stop.
We should work with facts as much as possible, IMO.
All of these child molesters and rapists need to be sentenced to life in prison, without the possibility of parole. Numerous studies have proven that pediophiles cannot be rehabilitated and are the most repeat offenders of all criminals. In prison, Child molesters are also the most hated of criminals. For them, being behind bars for the rest of their lives could be a fate worse than death. I wish I were a judge. I would always give them the maximum sentence.
Probably Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek. A block from my house...
Bay Point (locally known as "Gun Point") is the ghetto now - lot of blacks moved there from Oakland and Richmond, and the gang violence came with them.
The father of this son must be a moron. Or else he cares little about his son. He ought to be placed somewhere too or maybe talk with some of this guys victims. What a A$$hole.
I assumed the same.
