Scott (Johnson) recently suggested that the Minneapolis Star Tribune may be America's worst newspaper. That produced lots of emails from readers who nominated their own newspapers, or others with which they are familiar, for the honor. This gave us the idea for a new poll: What is the worst newspaper in the United States?
Here are the nominees, with commentary by those who nominated them:
The Minneapolis Star Tribune: Nominated by Scott, citing Mark Steyn: Unreadable sludge.
The Houston Chronicle: A reader who worked for the Chronicle for quite a while: Its main problem is not even its liberalism, which it suffers from, but its vapidity. On top of that, the editor from Hearst Corp. is trying to teach Houstonians how to be proper liberals. The fact that no one ever hears about the newspaper at Americas fourth largest city should tell you a lot.
The Olympian (Olympia, Washington): MHJ: From their editorial about how good it is that the Governor is going to direct the employees of the State Department of Transportation to cooperate with the State Auditor on taxpayer-directed performance audits, to their choice of letters to the editor, the Olympian begs for an editorial staff with common sense and analytical skills.

I guess the Austin (un)American Spaceman didn't make the list. It could'a been a contender.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution definitely gets my vote as the worst paper in the country. If I ever want to know what is in today's AJC, all I have to do is find a four-day-old copy of USA Today.

The Houston Chronicle is absolutely horrible. It's chock full of liberal commentary and even more liberal reporting disguised as news.
It is agenda reporting at its worst.
But, I think I mentioned it has a good comic section.

Any newspaper that is owned by the Gannet group belongs to the Is worse category. That includes our local paper, Teh Leafchronicle. Also known as Laughchronicle

I live in suburban P.G. County Maryland and have "The Washington Post" (Pravda On The Potomac)on one side and "The Baltimore Sun" on the other.
With "The Baltimore Sun" being so far left that it makes "The Washington Post" look like "The Washington Times" in comparison.
I'm cynical, since I remember reading "The Washington Star" Bulldog (Evening) Edition as a kid and teen and comparing the same stories in WaPo for its protozoan liberal spin.

I live in the MJS market and I am frequently offered free MJS newpapers at grocery store entrances. I always say "no thanks". I can do better on the Internet.

The Santa Rosa Depressed Democrat, despite its encouraging name, is reconstituted dog feces.
The San Francisco Comical, which sounds funnier than it is, is useful only as blankets for the homeless who they champion at every possible chance.
And finally, my current hometown rag, the Sacramento Bleed. It has all of the worst qualities of the 2 previous papers and none of their good points. From a reliably far,
Far,
FAR left editorial staff, who hasn't endorsed a Republican in 50 years to "The Poodle"
Diana Griego who apparently never interviewed a single person, ever, for her never ending series of sob stories that just happened to illustrate the evils of conservatives or on the other hand, showed the wise and tolerant policies of Liberals, the fishwrap is a DNC mouthpiece from beginning to end. The knews section is a disgrace, a never ending stream of regurgitated NYT, AP or Reuters copy republished seemingly without apology. The local knews consists of odd crime reports that never describe the "youths" committing them for fear of "profiling" them and an odd mix of local events and programs.
To top it off, their featured columnists are Krugman, the only economist in the universe that still believes you can tax your way to prosperity along with Ivans, MoDo and whatever Leftist they can round up for that days 10 Minutes of Hate. I usually go straight to the Workers World website and skip the Bees slower load times for the same info.
Strangely, the entertainment section is outstanding, with Kushman the highlight of the entire rag.
In total however, it is not worth the effort. After all, why read tomorrow about what happened yesterday when you can read about whats happening NOW on the 'net.

My hubby likes his sunday paper and his sunday shows. Although, he's tiring of the sunday shows, he still reads most of the sunday paper. We get it delivered for free, I suppose it's a numbers thing. Like you, I rely 99.9% on the internet for my news.

The the Pulliam family owners (relatives of Dan Quayle) sold it to Gannett. Since then, it has deteriorated both in quality and content. That's SOP for Gannett. They buy newspapers in small- to medium-sized cities (almost always making sure it's the only newspaper in town) and strip them to the bone, turning them into cash cows for the company. All major editorial decisions come out of Gannett's headquarters in Washington, which is why you see such overtly liberal coverage even in small towns where the readership have no interest in it: They have to follow the orders from DC, or they get fired, period. And since each of the papers has a monopoly, it doesn't matter whether or not they cut quality by 75%; after all, what are the readers going to do, cancel?
Admittedly, from a business point of view, it's been a brilliant strategy ... at least until the Internet finally reached most households. Now it's not working so well any more, and there's not a single employee anywhere in the entire Gannett organization with a clue how to fix things, because all the smart people have been laid off.

I'd say the Philadelphia Inquirer is the worst but since I don't read it I can't be sure.
Anyway I suspect the Boston Globe is probably worse and the Palm Beach Post is even worse than the Globe.
To: ButThreeLeftsDo
I've lost it now, but for a long time I had a clipping from the St Paul Pioneer Press quoting a New York Times piece citing how bad the Minneapolis Star Tribune was.
The funny part of the whole thing is that the Mpls "Red" Star buys about half of what it publishes from the NYT.

"a front page article on the topic approximately two years ago accompanied by a picture of two lesbians, one dressed as a bride, kissing while a little girl stood between them" Wow, two years ago, you're lucky. The Providence Journal runs those pictures two to three times a week!! I canceled me subscription a few years ago after they were purchased by Belo.http://www.chron.com/news/houston/
The picture of the lesbian "parents" and accompanying article has been on the website's 'Houston and Texas' section for more than a month. They only have at most 2 pictures on that page, but haven't changed one of them in more than a month. No agenda there, no siree...
BTW, the Dallas Morning News used to be one of the best papers in the country, then Belo took it over and turned it into garbage, too.
