Is Your Newspaper America's Worst?
Powerline Blog ^ | 11/20/06 | John Hinderaker

Scott (Johnson) recently suggested that the Minneapolis Star Tribune may be America's worst newspaper. That produced lots of emails from readers who nominated their own newspapers, or others with which they are familiar, for the honor. This gave us the idea for a new poll: What is the worst newspaper in the United States?

Here are the nominees, with commentary by those who nominated them:

The Minneapolis Star Tribune: Nominated by Scott, citing Mark Steyn: “Unreadable sludge.”

The Houston Chronicle: A reader who worked for the Chronicle for “quite a while”: “Its main problem is not even its liberalism, which it suffers from, but its vapidity. On top of that, the editor from Hearst Corp. is trying to teach Houstonians how to be proper liberals. The fact that no one ever hears about the newspaper at America’s fourth largest city should tell you a lot.”

The Olympian (Olympia, Washington): MHJ: “From their editorial about how good it is that the Governor is going to direct the employees of the State Department of Transportation to cooperate with the State Auditor on taxpayer-directed performance audits, to their choice of letters to the editor, the Olympian begs for an editorial staff with common sense and analytical skills.”

I don't know how you can get any lower than the Houston Chronicle.

Bad writing, total bias, and lousy delivery.

They do have good comics, though.

I cancelled my subscription to the Jackson Citizen Patriot (Jackson Mi.) A few years back. I had enough after the editor wrote a series of editorials about racism.

In one, she claimed that she knows there is racism in the community even if she couldn't see it out in the open. The final straw was when she wrote that she dreamed of a world where if a crime were committed, police would ask for a description of a suspect and witnesses would be unable to recall his race.

if you whipped your arse with the ARIZONA REPUBLIC you would allow it more respect that it deserves. A true waste.

THE PALM BEACH POST!!!

Liberal rag of retiree northeasterners who devote their entire editorial page to slamming Bush and have replaced their daily "Culture" section with 5-6 full pages of women's fashion tips.

I submit the Atlanta Journal Constitution as the worst, most slanted, most innaccurate and most biased piece of bird-cage liner in the business. The editor of the news/op-ed section is a nasty piece of work named Cynthia Tucker and THIS b*&^h wouldn't know the truth if it bit her on her substantial a##. It seems the publ;isher doesn't care a whole lot if she uses his paper to wage her little wars against those with whom she disagrees.

This paper gets my vote (I'll make like a demonRAT and vote TWICE).

I nominate The Hartford Courant(Connecticut). Their biased reporting over the years is too vast to detail. The last straw for me is their obvious stance on homosexual marriage illustrated by a front page article on the topic approximately two years ago accompanied by a picture of two lesbians, one dressed as a bride, kissing while a little girl stood between them.

I called the next day, gave them hell for running the article and promptly canceled my subscription.

Almost every paper in America should be on this list. Please list some that shouldn't. New York Sun, Washington Times, Waterbury Republican, Manchester Union-Leader, Boston Herald, Toronto Sun. Can you think of any others?

Obviously the worst dreck known to civilization is the New York Times, my grandfather used to read the Pravda everyday (he was a communist). I fail to see the difference.

The NY Post is delivered in my driveway.

True. Powerline is just trying to list the worst of the worst. I have a lot of respect for Mark Steyn, so, I'll have to agree with his choice. Though, the Red Star was my choice for worst long before I'd heard of Mark Steyn!!

The worst IMO is New York Slimes or the Washington Post. Both are decidedly so far left that it's pitiful.

Hey, howz about the "Pig Squealer" (Cleveland Plain Dealer), a liberal rag if there ever was one. Keeps endorsing Kook-sin-ich and all kinds of abortions (him included) anywhere at anytime.

This newspaper was so ashamed of being from Cleveland that they took the name Cleveland off its masthead back in the 70s. Trouble was, no one ever heard of the Plain Dealer anywhere except in Cleveland anyways, so Lord knows where they put it in other cities' libraries.

A tie between the Houston Chronicle and the Minneapolis Star and Sickle. I use to live in the former's area of circulation. 1995 front page editorializing pushing the "Queer Jesus" line.

The NY Times is truly a maddening publication. It is filled with densely detailed news coverage, it maintains a serious investigative reporting staff, and it's written for educated readers (not for a 9th grade education like so many papers). But it has that famous, suffocating liberal bias.

But I confess, I subscribe to their Premium Puzzles. I love their crossword puzzles, especially early in the week when I can do them. (They're easiest on Mondays. Saturdays are the most difficult. The Sunday puzzle is large but about as difficult as the Thursday puzzles.)

Yakima Herald Republic gets my vote. Reading that paper, you'd think you were somewhere in Mexico.
