Defenses on subs to be reviewed
Washington Times ^ | November 14, 2006 | Bill Gertz

Posted on 11/14/2006 3:00:14 PM PST by Paul Ross

Navy officials confirmed yesterday that an aircraft carrier battle group failed to detect a Chinese submarine that surfaced within weapons range of the USS Kitty Hawk. Anti-submarine defenses for the carrier battle group will be reviewed as a result, they said.

You are correct. IMHO, two SSNs should be with each carrier. But they do not have the speed of the S3 and this allows the S3 to loiter around all major threat axis, well in advance of the carrier...looking and hunting and identifying. With 10 of those on board a carrier, a whole lot of territory can be covered very quickly...and covered again and again if necessary.

My guess is that we knew the CHI-Sub was there all along. But we are reporting that we were caught by surprise.

" Start by refitting the S-3 Vikings for ASW duty and redeploying them to the carriers..."

towed-array sonar really limits this toay. SOSUS needs to be reviewed, SAW ops and the Hakws tag along boat needs to figure out what happened.

I agree with your analysis as well, at least two attack boats per task group.

"Why did the Chinese boat surface?"

That was my first question, and not one I've been able to come up with any good answer to. Why on earth would the Chinese tip us off to their capabilities?

They had to be on station/patrol in the area to be in trouble. Perhaps none were there so as not to provoke the Chicoms with the presence of 'special weapons'.

How and why is any of this being made public knowledge?

I've got another question for ya.... why, when the PLAN 'tagged' a US carrier (supposedly) did they give the game away by surfacing? This whole story is BS.

First, the Chi-Comms already know they successfully embarassed our Navy, and now can have some real confidence in a future clash. It will probably embolden their commanders...all up the chain of the Chi-Comm command to gamble on their aggression.

Second, Meanwhile, the play-dumb attitude of the Navy was likely at first, operational security to not comment on what did or did not know and detect. Normal SOP.

But Third, if that was as far as it went internally...with no corrective actions or policy to address the deficiency implemented, and instead...the incidentwas merely going into the circular file for memory flush as a bad dream, then it required someone place their career on the line...and demand integrity from up the food chain. The bureaucratic infight was trumped by someone with blinders on.

Hence, I surmise someone went over their head...to the people themselves.

They leaked it to Bill Gertz who could get the word out.

Bottom line: likely a leak from a whistle-blower...in the best sense of that word. Someone looking out for our national security.

And not just in name only or as a figure-head...or self-aggrandizing figure. Someone trying to warn us... that the bad news about our nation being seriously ill-prepared for a Chinese naval threat is being systemmatically swept under the rug by Panda-Huggers in High Places.

It may have been only lip-service, but the follow-up article here implies that the bureaucracy in the Navy now claims to be looking at studying the problem...

But as we Reaganites always said..."Personnel IS Policy." You leave Panda-Huggers in place up and down the line...and you will get a sanitized assessment to explain away everything...

Also, most people are not aware of how much direct influence over the Defense Dept. that the State Dept. has. It became flagrant during the Xlinton administration with Madeline Allbright and Strobe Talbott interfering constantly in Defense affairs.

But recent developments suggest that the interference was not checked with the new administration.

Robert Zoellick, Deputy Secretary of State,
(the supposed tough guy in the White House)...with Panda.
Zoellick resigned this Summer
to join the intensely pro-Chinese enabler...Goldman Sachs.

Where he was offered salary which apparently exceeds the $38 million annually that Henry M. Paulson was getting before Leaving Goldman to head the U.S. Treasury Dept....

The Musical Chairs with Goldman Sachs and our China Policy is there for all to see.

Also of Note: Richard Armitage with major Goldman Sachs tie-ins, was Deputy Secretary of State before Zoellick and he resigned earlier in 2004. Armitage, already far wealthier...from lobbying... than most would imagine a "public servant" to be... immediately began representing Chinese state interests such as CNOOC with his consulting company: Given a contingent fee ...$300,000 down and $300,000 later if he successfully effectuated their take-over bid of U.S. based UNOCAL through the White House and Congress.

Armitage with the President and then-Secretary State Powell at the Crawford Ranch.

Why on earth would the Chinese tip us off to their capabilities?

It's likely their version of "deterrence." Just as with the nuclear proliferation they have engendered right in our faces...and we don't do squat about it...they think we literally are a paper tiger. Strong on paper. But in reality...they can shove us around at will.

That's what they think. And they have just announced a new round of shoving to commence.

It was to send a message, my take, back off of North Korea.

One possible message of a number such implicit threats.

"And they have just announced a new round of shoving to commence."

Maybe, but I think there's a WHOLE LOT we're not being told about this.

If they meant to be confrontational, it's going to backfire on them. We'll respond to their new capabilities with countermeasures. It would have been much better for them from a warfighting point of view to keep their little secret for a more opportune time.

Actually, my first very cynical thought is that the Navy wants its ASW budget enhanced.

What I find interesting, and maybe my more submarine experienced friends on here might help me on this, is that there's no mention of one of our SSNs (there's at least one with every carrier battle group) tailing this Chinese boat. That's the feeling I get from this story, that there's more to it that what we're seeing here. Again, I could be wrong.

I wonder that too. I seem to recall reading that in the Cold War, the only way a sub being actively pinged could get it's stalking sub to quit was to surface.
