What I find interesting, and maybe my more submarine experienced friends on here might help me on this, is that there's no mention of one of our SSNs (there's at least one with every carrier battle group) tailing this Chinese boat. That's the feeling I get from this story, that there's more to it that what we're seeing here. Again, I could be wrong.I wonder that too. I seem to recall reading that in the Cold War, the only way a sub being actively pinged could get it's stalking sub to quit was to surface.
