NEW YORK -- A man fired a machine gun into the air Monday as he walked along streets in a commercial area and was shot by police after he wouldn't drop the weapon, witnesses said. No other injuries were reported.

Could easily be semi auto.

I've seen a .338 lapua round, next to a .338 wm, but have never fired either of them. There is a world of difference there.

Appalling police overreaction. Queens is home to many recent Third World immigrants accustomed to celebrating important life cycle events--weddings, funerals, the disemboweling of unchaste sisters--by firing weapons IN THE AIR. They hurt no one, as borough residents have learned to take shelter under hardened structures after the first burst. Time--yet again--for some intense diversity training for New York's Finest. Fortunately,as NY is a "sanctuary city" cops will not divulge the shooter's name to immigration authorities.

Considered a .45-70 too. Some have told me to go with a heavier bullet that isn't quite as fast.

As far as I can tell we are looking at a semi-automatic or a sub-machine gun. The only machine guns I have seen are 30 or 50 Cal. big things that set on tripods etc.

Have you seen "Quigley Down Under"? .... amazing shooting. He uses a 45-70 Sharps with an extended barrel.

Submachine gun fires pistol ammo--- .45, 9mm, etc.
Machine gun fires larger ammo- the BAR used 30-06, the .30 Browning air- and water-cooled, also 30-06, and the .50 BMG, affectionately known as Ma Deuce. Also 20mm, 30mm and even 40mm (same rounds, I think, as the old 40mm grenade launcher, the M-79)...

SUB machineguns are generally pistols or compact rifles (carbines) that are capable of firing more than one round with a single trigger pull.

"Try a .338 lapua, that'll knock the hair off your chest." - From how heavy a rifle? TRG in .338 has a muzzle brake, but a custom rifle at, say, 16 pounds in pretty handleable even without one.

My only experience with the lapua was several years ago with the Sako trg-41 without a brake. The gun weighed just under 11#, I believe the 42 comes with a brake.

With the brake, not "too much" difference between the .300 winmag and .338 lapua. Without it very noticeable. For long range accuracy no comparisons.

Who says they got it right? I doubt it was a full-auto. Probably just a scary-looking but junky MAC semi-auto.
