CHEYENNE, Wyoming (AP) -- Sen. Craig Thomas, hospitalized since Monday with pneumonia, has been diagnosed with a form of leukemia, his spokesman said Thursday.

The Wyoming Republican, who was easily elected to a third term while in the hospital, issued a statement saying he will undergo treatment and plans to return to Congress in January.

...are you counting the Vice-President in with the 49 GOP? If this is so, why are they boasting about having total power?

No...I miscounted.

It has turned out to be 49 dems, 49 GOP..and 2 independents.

BUT, the 2 independents have pledged to caucus with the DEMS...which I GUESS means they have the majority.

I still haven't found out if that is a Senate "rule" that can be changed...or if it is a Constitutional type rule.

I am wishing this man well, and hope that his treaments serve him well...I take note that he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia...this is a very dangerous form of leukemia, much harder to cure than other forms of leukemia...my own son died from one of the forms of acute myeloid leukemia, tho he died 21 years ago....still the treatment for this type of leukemia is very rough, and harrowing for anyone to go through, and I dont think that the statistics on the cure rate have increased in any substantial way, since my son was first diagnosed...the cure rate for this type of leukemia has gone up somewhat, but its still a very lethal type of leukemia...

Prayers offered for a remission and a return to better health...

Actually while there are 4 major forms of leukemia, with all its subsets, there are actually more than 20 forms of leukemia, some of them being extremely rare...but the most common types are ALL(acute lymphocytic leukemia)...this is the type that most children get, and its the type that usually carries the highest cure rate...there is also AML(actute myeloid leukemia), which is more common among adults, tho many children also get it(my own son was diagnosed with this when he was 15yrs old)...the cure rate for AML is much poorer than for ALL, and the treament choices of chemo drugs, are usually much harsher than those chemo drugs used for ALL...there is also CLL(chronic lymphocytic leukemia), and CML(chronic myeloid leukemia)...I am not sure about how the distribution of the chronic forms pans out...

Then there are many other types, including the Hairy Cell type mentioned by another poster...and tho most leukemias, involve the white cell blood lines, there is also a very rare type of red cell leukemia...

Each form of leukemia, and its various subsets, all carry different treatments, different prognosis, and different criteria...

I hate this leukemia...especially because so many little children get it...

No, Spector had Lymphoma. This good man has an excellent chance of recovery if they discovered it in time. Let's pray that his treatment is successful and he does return to Washington in January.

True. I lost a relative to leukemia, too. He started out with bleeding gums though he had very good oral hygiene. And then he began to develop red blotches all over his skin. I've always thought that dental offices should be more aware of this symptom of leukemia and be aware. Some leukemia can be reversed, but sadly, some doesn't respond to treatment.

What's so bad about the DU link?? Actually, the DU'ers were quite kind in most of their posts.

So what's your point, Newbie?

I'm sorry I called you a Newbie. I'm still in a bad mood after the election.

....Not to mention, I checked your reply to someone else where you said you were pleasantly surprised.

I agree - Arlen Specter had non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

I will say prayers for your family, and especially for your son...I know your road has been hard so far, its very difficult when ones child is diagnosed with any disease, which can take their life...I know it has been difficult for you, watching your child go through chemotherapy treaments, they are so hard on the body...

And of course, aside from all the physical trials your son has to endure, there are the mental trials for you as well...worrying about your child, worrying about every blood test, worrying about the results of the bone marrow aspirates, its all very wearing on the parents...

I hope you are taking care of yourself, as well as taking fine care of your son...when a child is diagnosed with leukemia, the whole family is affected in many different ways...

Again, my prayers go with you and your family, and I hope that if you feel like it, you can Freepmail me at any time...I always like to hear of how Freepers children with leukemia are doing....

My own child died, but I rejoice for every single child that is eventually cured...there is no greater trauma than to bury ones own child, and thus, I hope some day, this horrid leukemia, will become 100 percent curable...

take care...

I'm sorry I called you a Newbie. I'm still in a bad mood after the election.

Not to worry. In reaction to the election, I am spending a little less time in political forums and more on other things I love. I found a great site with banjo arrangements for all kinds of classic songs like All of Me, Baby Face, etc. That's what I've been enjoying this week.
