CHEYENNE, Wyoming (AP) -- Sen. Craig Thomas, hospitalized since Monday with pneumonia, has been diagnosed with a form of leukemia, his spokesman said Thursday.

Here is some fairly encouraging info from the National Cancer Institute.

Adult Acute Myeloid Leukemia

"Approximately 60% to 70% of adults with AML can be expected to attain complete remission status following appropriate induction therapy. More than 15% of adults with AML (about 25% of those who attain complete remission) can be expected to survive 3 or more years and may be cured. Remission rates in adult AML are inversely related to age, with an expected remission rate of >65% for those younger than 60 years. Data suggest that once attained, duration of remission may be shorter in older patients. Increased morbidity and mortality during induction appear to be directly related to age."

Hey, I've always thought that there should be only 99 Senators, RI & Del should have 1/2 Senator each! ;>)

How does that work out then? Do the Independents declare they are Dems or something to get the Committee chairs?

I suppose...I have asked on several threads if that is a "constitutional" solution...or just a Senate rule or what..

So far, no answers.

It is not in the constitution but rather just a Senate/House rule. In the House I understand the committee assignments are bundled with the vote for Speaker. I guess the committee assignments are bundled for the vote for President Pro Tempore? We haven't had an indy Senator since Harry Byrd....no, there was the fellow from MN after Wellstone...but he didn't serve at the beginning of a session...

Some forms of leukemia have become very treatable.

Yes, that's very true. Cancer isn't the scary thing it once was. It used to be that any kind of cancer was fatal.

"It used to be that any kind of cancer was fatal." And one of the quickest and most assured was leukemia.

When I was in college I met a young man right before the Christmas holiday (yeah, it was even called Christmas Holiday then!). He was diagnosed over the break, and gone by February. It was that fast, and that sure. Now, with such major medical advances, patients have a pretty good shot of beating it .. and I hope Sen Thomas is among them.

OMG, look at what the moonbats are saying.

I held my nose and followed your link to the DU.

I see none of the typical vitriol, ill-wishes, and plain-old nastiness on their thread.

What are you so shocked about?
