As national Democrats hang bunting and prepare for what they hope will be a joyous victory celebration in Washington tonight, John F. Kerry will be back in Massachusetts, quietly standing behind his state's gubernatorial nominee.
Kerry's treks around the country were supposed to help erase bad memories of 2004 -- convincing Democrats that Kerry was a dogged worker and belonged among the party's top contenders for 2008.
Instead, the campaign ended with the senator on the sidelines, grounded like a high-schooler caught misbehaving in class during the week before the prom.
His "botched joke" ...gave the Republicans ammunition at a time when they were running out of it.
He then either misjudged the situation or let his anger get the better of him: By choosing to lash out at the Republican scandal machine rather than quietly apologize, he guaranteed that the story would stay in the news.
Now, Kerry has to hope that the Democrats get a big enough victory to wash away any recriminations.
But if the election returns fail to meet the party's skyhigh expectations, Kerry would be among the biggest goats...
His decision to lead the libuster against Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. earlier this year had won him liberal support.
the longstanding perception that Kerry has done a poor job of building a staff.
Some big-name Democrats, including Hillary Clinton and Edward M. Kennedy, are known for their ability to attract the party's top writers and thinkers; Kerry is not.
And the fact that Kerry veered from the text in a way that made a bad speech worse is no surprise, either; in 2004, reporters with advance copies of Kerry's speeches would chuckle over how he added unnecessary words and stepped on his applause lines.

Big win..............by who???
All the more reason to vote GOP.
" the libuster ..."
8-)
What future? The dems are going to lose; they don't amount to nothing anyway, look at bj klinton, that what you want back in our Government?
Look at drunk Ted kennedy, aren't we about fed up with him? Only the people in Mass think he walks on water, to bad Mary Jo couldn't.
Its people like them that are a virus in our system, we need to rid them all out...why would anyone want someone like horsefaced kerry, who hates the military, to even be in our Government?
I say its time to run em out of dodge...
Don't worry, he isn't going away. He's too dumb to realize he's finished. Besides, Hillary needs patsies to beat for the nomination so it won't look like a coronation.
As H.L. Mencken so eloquently stated, "No one has ever lost money underestimating the intelligence of the American people".
bump
I agree, the Dems don't usually give the nod to a candidate who has lost already. However, that won't stop the far left from elevating him to hero status. They revere losers, like Carter, Ferraro. They are most respected in that camp.
Stick a fork in Kerry. HE's DONE
-----
He is certainly done with our military (finally) and he should be dead meat with everyone but the lamest of the mind-dead, low-IQ liberals...it really is time this country gets smart about its future as America and starts ridding itself of these Marxist-treasonist maggots like Kerry and his ilk...
(reporters with advance copies of Kerry's speeches would chuckle over how he added unnecessary words and stepped on his applause lines.)
I remember in the debates how Senator Edwards was much more skillful at sliming Cheney's lesbian daughter compared to Kerry who came off like the a&&hole he is.
Ah yes, the Wellstone habit of generosity.
It's almost a shame, he's such a useful idiot.
" an ironic Freudian slip."
That is what I thought, too.
I don't think so. The voters of Mass. will simply re-elect him foot-in-mouth and all - over and over again.
PURE BS.
This is about point a finger to ONE excuse for them not taking both the house and senate.
OR WORSE
Not taking either the house or senate.
I don't think kerry mattered at all.
