Losing Libertarians
Washington Times ^ | 11/6/06 | David Boaz

Take a look at independent voters. There are more of them than before, especially in the West. More than 25 percent of Arizona voters now register as independent or third-party voters. And according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll, they've shifted sharply toward the Democrats in this fall's elections.

"Libertarians usually vote for Republicans, who promise to hold down taxes, spending and regulation. But in the past six years of Republican control in Washington, federal spending has skyrocketed."

Humm. Seems to me that a Libertarian who votes for a Democrat over a Republican isn't a Libertarian; they’re a moron.

Democrats are the ones promising more liberty, freedom to kill your unborn baby, freedom to marry in any bizarre groupings you want. Freedom from work because some rich dude will be taxed so you can just hang out. Freedom from making adult decisions, freedom from accountability. Now that's liberty.

I see no reason whatsoever to put any faith in this article at all. Thank you for wasting my time.

Let me repeat: Libertarians are as SELF ABSORBED as the Marxists...POLAR OPPOSITES perhaps in respect to ideology but just as extreme.

"I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!" - Barry Goldwater. 1964 Acceptance speech.

Being "less" self absorbed means you would prefer people to think more about others than themselves. This puts YOU into the Marxist/collectivist camp whereby you are forced to be your brothers keeper... even at the point of a government gun.

No thanks.

I'd say that we see pretty much eye-to-eye on the issues, but the idea of tying up the government by creating inter-party gridlock is not a good long-term solution.

We need to kill off the party - root and branch - that is ideologically wed to big goverment and wealth transfer - and that's the Democrats.

Freed from the perceived need to compete with the Democrats for pig votes, the Republicans would come home to the underlying ideology - small government and individual responsibility. I'm afraid that has little chance of happening as long as the Republicans don't see a way to put together a majority without a certain portion of the pig vote.

They want to take guns away, and if you don't have the liberty to remain alive, the other liberties don't matter at all. I'm voting mostly (R) this time around, partly for the gun vote and partly, especially for the governor of Colorado, to obtain gridlock instead of an entirely blue state. Musgrave (r) is very, very pro-gun and I will happily vote for her, irrespective of her other beliefs.

Actually I was not going to vote because the Republicans are too wishy washy on gay issues. That's my number one issue. Then I bought a bow to teach some of my kids about archery and happened to read that in England it's illegal to bow hunt. The very idea of bow hunting being illegal game me a cold chill and I decided I'd better vote. Now I realize the Democrat trick of getting me depressed almost worked.

Okay. I'll grant you that one. You'd have to pay for a few more vice cops. As a profoundly religious homeschooling mom I spend my days with social conservatives. Within that group I know of no one who drinks irresponsibly nor uses drugs, nor gambles, nor has their children in public school, nor is on welfare, nor has been incarcerated, nor has a social disease, and I include the teenagers in that. None of the husbands is unemployed. All are net taxpayers into the treasury. IMO, not a bad tradoff for a few more vice cops.

You want to reduce government spending? Pray for more social conservatives. We're easy on the public purse.

Or like Ron Paul they pretend to be Republicans. You know who they are by how badly they dress.

Let's not get stuck on the semnatics of self abosrbed ---As I see it---libertarianism violates a principle rule of politics going back to the origins of Western civilization and that is that all parties - individuals, groups, nations - will pursue ends that are disastrous by their own standards if they are not checked in some meaningful way. Of course along the way representative democracies may become corrupted by an entrenched political machine for example the Dems...and that corruption can be broken...but the principle at work here is the unity of society...not the individual.

The problem with Libertarianism and communism and islam is that they enforce abstractions and utopias...dangerous minefields for humanity as we have seen.

And you continue to show a level of ignorance about libertarian philosophy that is utterly stunning. There is nothing "Utopian" about it. Of course, if you don't like absolute personal responsibility and truly equal Rights for all, then you'll say anything about libertarianism that you can to try and denigrate it.

"Take a look at independent voters."

Independent doesn't translate to Libertarian....far from it.

Wow, lot of deep thiking here. I'd be inclined to agree with these thoughtful theories, if I didn't know that the reason AZ is going lib is because of the massive influx of Californians.

Libertarians are known for having trouble responding to arguments that undermine their fixed and unswerving ideology.

Like you. Too bad.
